LS, Perhaps this will be an unpopular opinion here, but for what you are searching, I'd suggest that a better choice for your purposes would be SUSE or Ubuntu or something similar. Why? 1. Puppy is meant as a light-weight distro, and as such it's support for X and Wine is not as rounded as SUSE or U...

Jocas, Perhaps I can help. With the configuration you described, hda is your BOOT hard drive. When the computer starts, it will boot that drive. To get the Grub / Lilo screen, you will need to install the boot loader to hda MBR, rather than hdb. With it installed in hdb, it will never be seen. What ...

Mr Doolie, A couple of thoughts that may or may not be significant / helpful. 1. My preferred course here would be to backup data and re-install. 2. For partition re-sizing etc, I use QtParted, a graphical program that looks like Partition Magic. I use a Knoppix CD for this. 3. A couple of thoughts ...

Gday, Further to my previous, I was thinking what might have happened. A wild stab in the dark but how's this? You have / had a Mandrake installation that was ext3 filesystem, and used Lilo in the MBR. You or it modified Lilo to allow Puppy to boot from the Mandrake centric Lilo. Now, Puppy filesyst...

Hi, I would say that the kernel panic was probably caused by lilo pointing to the wrong kernel to try and start Puppy. When you set Lilo up, you have to be careful that it knows which kernel you are pointing to. (ie mount the partition containing the correct kernel and explicitly point to it). There...

Nathaniel, A basic procedure that will work is: Partition the HDD into 4 partiitions: one for XP (the first) one for Ubuntu one for Puppy (one to two gigs min) one for a swap partition (about double the size of the RAM - eg 256 RAM - 512meg swap) The way I partition is to use the Qtparted tool from ...

OK, I'll stick my hand up and have a go ...... It's actually an interesting question, because Puppy is a little different from most Linux distros in that it's basic biological urge is to load everything into memory and run from there. Having said that, I think it is unlikely you need to worry. KDE a...

slvrldy17, It might be me, but in the posts above, there seems to be a little confusion creeping in. I'd suggest a good reading of Barry's original site www.goosee.com/puppy to understand the 2 ways that Puppy can be installed to a HDD. Overall though, he has gone to considerable trouble to make sur...

Assorted Server Tutorials
A website I found recently with a number of Linux Server tutorials. Whilst it deals specifically with setting up a Debian box, there may be some things there that some Puppians can use.

cncuser A bit more on what I said previously .. just be careful we both aren't saying a variant of the same story. As far as the origins of Puppy go ... well my previous comments still stand. Sorry. Actuallly, Puppy isn't based on Mandriva, or Vector. It's a common mis-conception. Barry built it from scratch. Yes, he used a specially configured Mandrake system to allow him to compile FOR Puppy, but Puppy is .. well ... Puppy. Whlst I'm happy for any corrections, I think you will find the above ...

I started writing another big long post. However, it all comes down to this: 1. People need to understand what Puppy is about and why it is what it is. 2. People need to understand that Linux is NOT Windows and that if they choose to look properly, they will find wonderful gems. 3. Installation of p...
