Boxpup
This is an enjoyable Puppy variant, and it might win a permanent spot on the usb drive I reserve for Puppy, assuming I can get it to work properly with my BCM43xx wireless. Thanks!

BCM43xx Doesn't work
My BCM43xx wireless doesn't work with Alpha 3. No access point is found. Weirder, what has always been seen as eth1 is now seen as eth0, and my non-wireless network card, which is always seen as eth0, is now seen as eth1. I tried loading alternate modules with no success. I rebooted and tried lots o...

Icecat vs Firefox
Icecat and Firefox are supposed to be identical except for their logos, but judging from the version numbers, the Icecat is newer, so I would expect it to win the competition between the two. They would probably be pretty close if they were the same version. To me, Firefox 3 is far and away the one ...

Words
I know it was suggested that the topic be dropped, but I can't resist pointing out that a city official in the US (perhaps Washington, D.C.) was fired a few years ago for using the word "niggardly" He was reinstated after it was established that this is a perfectly respectable word... Also...

Speaking of browsers, CNET recently gave the latest Opera a 10 out of 10, a pretty amazing score for CNET. I will probably keep using Firefox mostly, but I have been following Opera since its inception and will keep giving it a try...

Putting down Windows
"thanks for Dingo NOP 4, it has made my shift from windoze TOTAL.. thanks once again for the excellent os" Oh, how I want to reformat my laptop and only run Linux on it. Instead, I am using this version of Linux, and Windowmaker, from a flash drive. What stops me? Almost entirely, text to ...

Root, rot, rut
Sometimes I want to protect myself from myself! Running as non-root means that if I go doing something slightly more important, I am reminded by denial of permissions that it is more important. Typing sudo doesn't irritate me that much. I'm reminded of the cartoon that seems to be destined to the sa...

Holding Forth
When I first got access to a PC, running, I think, at 4.77 mHz, with a big 10-meg hard drive and with whatever the first step over monochrome graphics was, I sent off for a floppy disk that had Forth on it. I had fun, though I don't think I really learned much. But I often think of returning to Fort...

Subforums
Ok, but I have often seen the answer to a question or problem in a discussion of a derivative that I don't have installed. How about a few subforums dedicated to distribution clusters that are related? There would be a list at the top of each subforum of the distributions discussed there. Otherwise,...

Displaying pictures in configuation utility
I found out how to display pictures in the Window Maker Preferences utility. I noted that Windowmaker seemed to expect the icons in this directory: /usr/local/GNUstep/Applications/WPrefs.app/ On another computer, I discovered a /tiffs directory that contained the icons needed In Puppy, I had to crea...

Windowmaker!
After touring window managers again, I return to Windowmaker! It's the only one that's easy enough for me.
I haven't tried this Puppy one, but am about to. I run Windowmaker in Debian Linux (Sidux) but learned to love it in Suse Linux.

Fix Combo Mode!
I can't get USB install to work without Combo Mode! I seem to have tried everything else under the Sun. Combo mode of course has the bug that personal storage is set up wrong, so after installing with my 2-gig usb drive I only have 30 megs free storage. But at least it works! With 3.01, practically ...

Good Firefox
I found an excellent Puppy-friendly version of Firefox 3 Beta 5. I believe that it was from the person who created Wolf Pup. It works great for me in Dingo. As I recall (I'm in ugh, Windows at the moment), it even has java already implemented.

BCM43xx
"With the .25 kernel, the bcm43xx module is replaced by b43 and b43legacy modules. "
Well, they don't work for me. I guess I'll have to stay with the older kernel.

BCM43xx, Personal Storage file problems
I had two problems with the (625?) kernel. One, the correct module for my BCM43xx wireless didn't load and didn't appear to be available. So my usual tricks for getting on the internet didn't work. This does NOT happen with the other Puppy posted today. (621?) Two, there is something strange about t...
