My advice for what it's worth ...
Install Puppy on a usb stick, then you can play with it completely separate from Vista. Just do a bios switch to boot from the usb first. Works for me. Feel secure that I'm not going to screw up Vista (which isn't THAT bad - i'm speaking of after 25 years of DOS, Novell, Windows, and intermittent en...

Thanks
Thanks for the update. Alienjeff: sadly I'm afraid there's some good reason to blame the US for certain events in the known Universe, but not for events in the known unknown Universe, or even in the unknown known Universe .... How things could have gone so wrong when it's all based on one of the mos...

Opera Widgets don't display correctly
I installed Touch the Sky widget. It displays fine except it isn't transparent over Opera or the desktop - has a large dark rectangular background which overlays the background. In Windows this is transparent.

HOW-do I upgrade Opera?
Opera tells me there is a new version. When I go to the upgrade site it asks what Linux am I using - what should I choose?
If I upgrade will the process be automatic (as it is in Windows)?
Very reluctant to do anything not knowing what to expect!
Advice please.

Network wizard doesn't work. How to connect at boot?Solved
I need to automate - that is get commands to run as a script. The idea is that they setup my wifi ... First set of commands normally run in a terminal session, after which the second set are run in a second terminal. First set do the WPA connect, second obtain the dhcp. (Network Wizard doesn't work)...

Broadcom BCM43 with WPA - works
Using ndiswrapper and windows drivers together with command line wpa_supplicant works! Fails miserably using Network Wizard because WPA (of 8 characters, either alpha or hex equivalent) doesn't connect.

SUCCESS for Broadcom and WPA !!!!
I used the suggestion of Tempestuous to look at: http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Wifi/wireless-utilities/wpa_supplicant_README.txt I followed the link for WPA encryption. This worked like a dream running all commands from the terminal. I loaded the win drivers via ndiswrapper first. So. just remains to ge...

What I really mean is if only I could get the wifi working then I could concentrate on learning new tricks - the hard wire connection to the internet (which works fine, by the way) is located in a very very cold kennel ... and with winter coming! Problem is I don't have enough background knowledge t...

Maybe I could just change the WPA key to 9 characters? Means reconfiguring three separate wifi devices which work 100% .... not sure Maybe I should just bury a few bones and spend my time looking for them - come back in a few weeks to see if a 3.02 fixes things Starting to lose heart - these command...

This what I tried. I blacklisted bcm43xx Used ndiswrapper to install win drivers Network seen, etc. Tried WPA connection using hex passkey NO connection. Baffled and now chasing my tail in ever decreasing circles! Is anybody else trying to connect using broadcom, or generally working on this problem?

Half a solution?
I did the rmmod suggestions. Ran network wizard. Declared WPA and put in the hex passphrase. No luck.
I redid the procedure using WEP and the hex pass. This worked!
Tried the Auto DHCP - this fails!
Back to square one (or its hex equivalent).
Any more ideas?

update
If I add ;s to the alpha key the wizard accepts it and tries, but fails, to connect. Sort of progress. The RTutil utility finds the network but reports encrption as WEP - it's definitely WPA!
I'll try the unload driver suggestion. Do I just type modprobe bcm43xx in the terminal?
Cheers

Thanks but ...
Thanks for the hint but that thread is completely beyond me and it doesn't refer to Broadcom at all. I wouldn't know where to start! I can't even get the driver to unload using ndiswrapper - says it can't find it, but another command, forget which, says it is already loaded. Looks like I'll have to ...

Broadcom bcm43 WIFI WPA problem on eth1
Connection woes ... with the bcm43 firmware route, wifi is set to eth1. When I try to configure it for WPA it keeps asking me for the key and reports it must be alphanumeric or hex - even though it is the CORRECT alpha key. Eh? So what's happening? If I do a scan, it reports the wifi network with ch...
