The pup_save file and the swap file are completely different
The pup_save file is a clever way to allow one to boot one OS from the hard drive (Windows is one option) while also - on other boots --optionally choosing a boot from the CD of Puppy Linux. The pup_save keeps the application programs and configuration data for your computer, which allows you to cus...

Mouse and keyboard not working.
Last time that happened to me. I had a computer with a PS/2 Mouse and a PS/2 Keyboard and I had them plugged into the wrong sides. When Puppy booted it asked what kind of mouse and keyboard you had. So which do you have, and which did you select? A Mouse plugged into a serial port can be difficult. ...

Puppy 4.1.2 Gparted has functioning problems when
Puppy 4.1.2 Gparted has functioning problems when a swap file has already been created. At least the problem occurred to me in the following sequence of events. I have a 700 Mhz Celeron with approximately one Gigabyte of RAM with an Quantum Maxtor CX 13.6 GB hard drive. I used Ubuntu 8.10 to install...

Older version
I feel Puppy 4.1.2 is a really good candidate to work. This version does extremely well with limited RAM. There is a closely similar version on the download page, Puppy 4.1.2 R. The R is for Retro and has an earlier version of the Linux kernel. I did see a note from someone on the forum, who is much...

I have not tried a Presario,however
If I was sitting right there with the Presario in front of me. When I turn on the computer, and the screen comes up with all the red lettering, that you probably feel you did not have enough time to read. The bottom of the screen has the word boot. Right there I would type in, 'Puppy acpi=off, pfix=...

Puplet to throttle down Notebook hardware.
A standard Notebook that has the battery life of a Net Book when used in a reduced power mode. I am not sure it is possible. Puppy now runs in only one core of a multi core processor: Does that save any power? Can one reduce the amount of RAM that eats power from inside Linux? Can one circumvent the...

Gateway S3 Twister Display in Puppy 4.12
I have an 2001 vintage Solo 1400 Gateway notebook which has this display device listed as an S3 Twister Display, I suppose chip. As the Processor is a Celeron 900 Mhz I think it is worth looking at trying to get Xorg to work with this. I have tried the additional Xorg Dot Pets. Has anyone else gotte...

If Windows works with this computer.
And the version of Puppy does not, if it is an earlier version of Puppy, Wonder if Puppy version is enabled to work with the processor you have. So you can understand why some are curious here about what processor you installed on your Motherboard. Was it easy to put the cooling fan on it? How much ...

Encryption seems to involve installing dotpets.
Dot Pets that are specific for that type of encryption. I have not worked with it very much. My Notebook is somewhat limited in Processing speed and may not be able to do that. Perhaps you could tell us how well the computer runs an un-encrypted wireless connection. ? EDIT: later. I meant, have you ...

Save and Restor from Partition.
Since someone mentioned the option of using a partition on another hard drive. If one of the drives involved is a Seagate, then the Seagate Disc Wizard and tools has some options to accomplish copying a partition and then restoring it. The program will allow for different size partitions. I am prett...

Thanks for the advice.
I just took the laptop to the public library with its free wireless to see if I could get on. When I first started I used XP with the battery to get it online. It would see the connection, make up to the connection, and not download a web page, which it would previously do with it plugged into a sta...

Need advice on fixing up an older laptop.
I was recently given a 2001 vintage Gateway Solo 1400 laptop with a 900 MHz Celeron, 128 MB of RAM, ten Gigabyte hard drive. My brother in law could not get it to function, then his grandson helped him out by re-installing Windows XP. Brother in law said the Notebook had been continously plugged in ...

Which version of Puppy are you using?
I freely admit to know little about Broadband compared any one else around here. As I said in another thread. Puppy 4.1.1 and now Puppy 4.1.2 both hook up very easily( to Broadband). Ran the Network Wizard, and followed instructions. And zap it worked. I also tried the latest version of Ubuntu on li...

How difficult would it be for you to get Puppy 4.1.2?
I also had problems with Puppy 3.01 and Broadband. As I have never had Broadband before, I knew nothing about what anyone was suggesting. I never solved it. Does not mean it is impossible. Just a later version of Puppy took care of the problem. I tried Puppy 4.1.1 and now Puppy 4.1.2 and both hook u...

I can play movies in 4.1.2. I seem to have problems with Mi Pup. Overall I like this puplet. I noticed that it does not come with Java. Perhaps I messed something up when I installed the dotpuphandler.pet and JRE from the .de download site.

Yes it does work.
The Ethernet card is 100 Mbps went straight in without fuss. I did not have to hunt for a driver for Windows Vista side, I already knew that Puppy 4.1.1 was happy to work with it without fuss. Thanks to whomever did the Networking Wizard. A Speed Test said the Download Speed is 4 Mbps and the upload...

Will Old ethernet card work in more modern computer.
Two days ago the cable connection to my fastest computer died. I have determined that the problem is that LAN connection, which is on the MOBO and is not working. That computer is a Dual Quad Core 2.4 Ghz and 4 GB of RAM. I get online just fine with a 700 Mhz Celeron and less than a GB of RAM. Puppy...

Some experiences of mine.
In Puppy 3.01 I fought a similar battle. I installed mozillathunderbird.pet So I could install the add-on to Thunderbird named Enigmail. Then I found that no one would exchange encrypted messages with me. Ha. Ha. I do not see a download for Thunderbird.pet in 4.xx as was in available in 3.01 I read ...
