Hi, I tried a fresh build of the latest slacko 14.0 woof-CE testing branch and slackware 14.0 repository here:

A suggestion for a new thread for this iso/branch was made so here is one.

Feel free to play with it and report any problems, especially if they are not present in the original Slacko 5.7 (most can probably be patched in woof-CE or the adrv as needed)

Changes added in the adrv (optional file):

- Firefox 17esr replaced with Firefox 28 (palemoon and slimjet-14.0.16 can also be used if you want a bit more)
- Added a suspend button on desktop for laptops
- Re-added Ctrl-Alt-Backspace functionality to xorg.conf
- Added some missing mini-icons
- Added a working sfsconvert with the mksquashfs3 files
- Set gnome-mplayer as the default music player (pMusic can still be used if desired)
- Made "skip scanning extracted files for missing dependencies (faster)" the default in ppm

The default OpenSSL in slackware 14.0 is 1.0.1 but there is some information about 1.0.2 here (thanks belham2)

The kernel has been updated from 3.4 to 3.18 (nopae) as it's still being maintained well by Greg on http://www.kernel.org

I use this as my main OS for everything, my laptop is from 2005 and still works great.

A few quick ?'s

What version of BASH is installed? bash = 4.1.0
IIRC glibc is 2.15?

Good choice on 3.18.x kernel, though "officially" EOL, I heard the same. I presume 3.18.87. OK

OpenSSL 1.0.2 is now "n" revision. (use slackware.com --> security advisories --> 2017: the pup-update repo's might still refer to 1.0.1u(1))

wget is 1.19 OK
curl is 7.57 OK

Finally, if interested, I got FF45.9esr funxioning very good on my 5.7-spins... A few tweaks still needed but passable. I will revise it shortly, anyway, with those tweaks.

I downloaded and boot from CD on my EEEpc900a, did noot install.
All looks well. I checked...

openssl 1.0.1u2 this can go to 1.0.2g -->n if you wish
bash 4.1.0 *** really needs the upgrade ***

WARNING! bash as used in this distro is vunerable to She11$hock.
slackware has 4.1.17 (look for slackware13.37 version) in security advisories -->2017

Firefox28 needs to be completely configured by the end-user. No Comment, most distros are similar.

Thanks for that info 8Geee. I used the flags mentioned by mavrothal here to compile a 14.0 version of 4.1.17, as the Slackware versions had these differences and SFR's link seems dead now. Might add it to the adrv/iso later if I encounter no issues with it.

Tried it on an ext2 partition: worked great.

Yah, thats about right, ext4 is problematic, ext2&3 OK. Using ext3 on similar pup. No problems.

Hmm, actually it did work with ext4 on another computer, what led me to think that was the problem was the error it wrote related to ext4 (didn't boot).

Installed the r5822 (25 jan 2018) build to an 8 GB Lexar flash drive formatted ext3. Installed belham2's PET to update openssl to 1.0.2l, and replaced e3 with my own custom build. After an evening of kicking the tires, no problems to report.

Did a manual frugal update from r5822 to r6052. Installed latest Dnes build of PaleMoon and posting from this now. Haven't had any problems at all so far.

Just tried this again 6052 build.

Loads/runs well on eeePC-900a.
nice update to kernel and slackware

I did some personal things here as experiment, that follows the EONS build/ Original Slacko Puppy 5.7.

1.) BASH = 4.1.017
2.) openssl --> 1.0.2o direct... no PPM.
3.) FF28 replaced w/ configured FF27 (root)
4.) PPM altered to USA (slackware/patches/PupSlacko/PS14)

Using save-file on SSD, USB-stick boots normal to my spins.

I have not tested printing (USB direct, not network).

I would recommend your 6052 as LTS slacko-puppy5.7.
Considering the major recent kernel changes due to meltdown/spectre, a new kernel-patch every 2 months seems appropriate. The 3.18.102 is latest.

Hmmm- remaster problems to a USB stick (intended mode13 operation). Note remaster time 31 minutes... original Slacko5.7 is under 18 minutes.

Oh dear initrd//sfs warning --> quit Therefore I can't get this pup on USB.

Looks like initrd/mnt/tmpfs is proper location.

1Gb ext3 format.

So, this pup like other new pups(?) has this intermediate step of making a USB Flash in fat32, then configure the system, then save with shutdown/restart and install again to another USB drive (partition/formatting any way you like). Copy the 3fs and done. Pupmode is 13.

Two USB's needed instead of one. But it works,

In Related News: got this on USB 768Mb ext3. Tossed adrive and put FF27 in root. Tossed unwanted vid-drivers. Gdmap reporting 460Mb with all the shares/servers. It should stay under 500Mb once I put in personal files and run the browser on-line.

Besides my getting used to this new way of doing things its really is nice to see the kernel upgraded to a supported version. At least Meltdown/Spectre is being fixed enroute. Thats not happening in 3.4.x.

These older FF browsers are quite snappy once they start-up. I tried ice-cat31.8 and it was as slow as FF45.9esr (read: molasses).

I would recommend this as the successor to Slacko5.7 original. Folks with an Atom CPU can still use the EONS version, those with anything else should be pointed here.

The only suggestion I have at this point is to have Foomatic xqx and zjs installed directly to Puppy (not in z or a drive). This will help with newer HP Laser Printers (usually under US$100 for base models w/wifi).

Also found in forum is the post to upgrade Slacko-based pups OpenSSL from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2g. There are a few caveats here AFTER the pet install... mainly that one must go to Slackware.com --> security advisories --> 2018 and D/L the latest OpenSSL patch (1.0.2o). The version is Slackware 14.2, and the solibs are done first as a pet, then the OpenSSL as pet.

Most netbooks were Intel Atom. No Meltdown or Spectre problems, and no hidden "policeman" on the CPU chip (Intel Management Engine, and other names).

The two items in the post right above yours is all they need.

On the Other Hand, I have made the EONS spin for a few years. It has everything you listed, EXCEPT the kernel is 3.4.82. You may remove the office if you don't want it. As far as I know acpi works in that one, but Lenovo may disagree, just as it did with this version.

i've spent a lot of time to setup slacko5.7.0 (pae though i have only 1G ram - don't remember why i chose this...) the way i wanted.

if it's only about openSSL, i think i can keep my slacko5.7.0 and install the update.
