I've just migrated over from xenial64 using a lenovo x230

I had on previous builds a very lively mouse, on the final build this is still an issue even with sensitivity and threshold reduced to a minimum it's still a little brisk, any pointers (!) to bring the speed down some more

I use chrome and have had to move from 57 to 73 as I was stating to have page errors so now have to use spot

I know I will have to live with it so would like an 8gb savefile to provide sufficient space in spot downloads

I built with the largest (4gb) savefile but savefile resize only shows the first 4 options up to 512mb

I found the script and deleted the first few size options so it began at 4gb but the drop list is now unpopulated, I'm not clever enough to debug it so could someone take a peek?

:)

BionicPup32 is using the new-ISO/Delta-update process.
I has the advantage that does not affect your savefile/folder and you can have the updates even if you run with no savefile. It is involved however and you have to monitor the forum or PB's site for the updates.

The BionicPup64 uses quickpet updates.
I user friendly and automated but is taxing your savefile/folder and you need a remaster if you want to run with the updates and no savefile.

There are suggestions trying to merge the two but no puppy builder is considering it yet.

Thanks @Mav - excellent summary....

I would just add that from a developer point of view, the new iso/delta method is fully supported by woof-ce which automatically finds changed components and then builds a new iso with very little developer effort. Xdelta3 then produces the delta.

Quickpets on the other hand I would imagine are more developer effort intensive - unless 666philb has a private tool to assist him.....

And I agree that keeping the personal save container free of system updates makes the container more likely to survive and not have to be rebuilt by users over a succession of updates.

Hello guys,

I am having booting problem with Bionicpup64 8.0 on my laptop.

It has AMD Ryzen 2500u CPU. It is Ubuntu certified laptop. Came with pre-installed 18.04.

You can see my specs here(only difference is mine has 2500u cpu):
https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201808-26442/

What I did:
- I checked the iso hash and checked my usb drive for read/write errors.
- I burned iso to usb with Rufus utility with dd mode.
- Secure boot is disabled.

UEFI boot attempt:
- After the Grub menu I selected normal boot and in another attempt I selected no X mode. In both attempts:
- As soon as selection is made and Grub disappears black/blank screen appears.
- No errors, no text cursor, I can't give input and have to shutdown by pressing power button. It freezes.

Legacy boot attempt:
- Same as UEFI, after the Grub menu I selected normal boot and in another attempt I selected no X mode. In both attempts:
- Grub menu disappears and classic loading text appears like "Loading vmlinuz....., decompressing Linux..., Parsing ELF... done" BUT after "Booting the kernel." output the laptop freezes again and text cursor moves next like and starts blinking.
- Again I can't type anything and unresponsive except the blinking of text cursor.

I did test other Linux distributions. Ubuntu 18.04 with kernel 4.15 and 4.18, Devuan 2.0 with kernel 4.9 has no problems with booting with UEFI mode. Linux Mint 19.1 has same problem as Bionicpup64.

After posting my problem to Beginners Help ( Start Here) section on this forum I tested BionicPup32 8.0 and XenialPup64 7.5 with Legacy mode. They don't get stuck after "Booting the kernel." and boots up fine.

I am surprised because Bionicpup64 8.0 has kernel 4.19.23 and I thought it is newer than those other distros that I specifed and should run fine. What could cause these freezes at the time of booting?

Thank you

What happens when you try to make a WiFi connection setup?
You do what?
You see what?
What connection program are you trying to use?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Acer R11 and other Braswell chromebook kernel requirements

#790 Post by vtpup »

Confirmed yesterday via Fatdog64 that for the keyboard to be functional on the Acer R11 Chromebook, and others using the Intel Braswell chipsets, the following module must be compiled into the kernel:

pinctrl_cherrywell

Note, that this module will not work unless explicitly compiled into the kernel. It does not work if a user attempts to modprobe or load it after boot.

I tried several times to load BionicPup (and many other puppies) while researching this issue, and while BP ran, the keyboard was non-functional. Modprobing the module after boot had no effect.

After I requested it, yesterday, Kirk compiled the pinctrl_cherrywell into Fatdog64's kernel, and that made the keyboard functional.

To my knowledge, that is the only Puppy derivative so far that is usable on these Chromebooks.

In the console enter:

Code: Select all

rfkill list
Post what it gives for output.

@vtpup - interesting. I am compiling the 4.14.49 kernel tonight - will include that as enabled rather than as a module. Unusual - have you tried editing
/etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG & adding it to ADDLIST (space either side) then rebooting?

Not butting in but just adding a little info for troubleshooting purposes for the Centrino Ultimate-N 6300

Similar problems described in the following link with a fix, may be helpful or not. Instances of both no wifi and slow wifi with this card.
https://www.linuxquestions.org/question ... 175599455/
The purpose of the modification is to re-enable TX AMPDU aggregation which always used to be ON by default in the iwlwifi driver.

In recent times the default setting of TX AMPDU is OFF, so all we are doing is putting it back to its original default setting (ON) of yesteryear.

There is one related update possibility not using woof-ce approved method. The user can make a pet
of the delta updates using the base .iso and delta update file by running the script from peebee in the following
linked post - mostly useful for those running from live CD to keep using the same disc when updating by just
installing a .pet which eliminates the need to burn a new CD in order to update.

CPU scope in task tray

#797 Post by Rodney Byne »

Hi,

regarding the little CPU usage scope to the left
of the date in the system tray, can someone describe
in steps, how to alter the colour of the usage part,
from very dark grey/black, to yellow, to show up better
against the light grey background.
Thanks in advance.

Yes. That worked. Thank you. Now to make a frugal install to my usb stick.

The meds I take make things hard to remember. Just couldn't remember that fix

The item in the JWM task bar just to the left of the date is called "xload". It is not a CPU meter. See this thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28483. A quick read of the first several posts will provide some insight to its usage.

In order to change the colors of the display do the following:

Open the ROX to your home (root) folder,

Left click on the "eye" icon in the Rox toolbar to show hidden files.

Locate the .jwmrc-tray file.

Right click on this file and select "geany text editor" or "open as text".

Find the following lines:

<Swallow name="xload" width="32">xload -nolabel -bg "#888888" -fg "#222222" -hl "#4C7CC1"</Swallow>
Edit this entry to change the color of the xload meter.

Save the edited file and restart your window manager.

@vtpup & anyone else interested - I've made a 64bit UBUNTU derivatives kernel, 4.14.49 with TPM disabled & PINCTRL_CHERRYVIEW enabled. Tested OK in Xenialpup64 & Bionicpup64. Bionicpup64's firmware included. See: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 83#1023783
