You might need two or three files that are in the devx_xxx.sfs file. If you already have that file, you're fine. Otherwise you'll need /usr/X11R7/lib/libXcursor.a, /usr/X11R7/lib/libXcursor.la, and /usr/X11R7/lib/libXcursor.so.
Later today I'll make a dotpup with them.
Once they're installed, you can just place icon themes in /root/.icons/, and symlink the one you want to /root/.icons/default. Restart X, and presto.
(FYI, Pizzapup 3.0 and I think Grafpup 2 have those file included already)

That should install the needed libraries. MU made a dotpup once with many cursors and a nifty changer. There are more on the net. I haven't gotten around to seeing what's out there, but I've always been a fan of the "yellowdot" theme in MU's dotpup.

Disregard what I said about needing libraries, you don't. Just symlink /usr/X11R7/lib/libXcursor.so.1 to /usr/X11R7/lib/libXcursor.so.
What I said about installing cursor themes is still relevant though.

Pgood,
Many thanks for your help. I tried your symlink and couldn't get it to work. I 'm a newbie and probably need a 'Beginning Beginners' forum. I assumed you do a ln -s and then the string, but it got kicked back.
Also, regrettably, MU's mouse stuff is a dead link now, but I'll look around for other pointers and icons and keep trying.
Thanks again!

Good luck.

Fossil,
I tried these and found one I can live with, so thanks a lot.
I should warn others, though, that after selecting a cursor, it tells you to restart X to test it. Then when you find one to do a CTRL-ALT-Backspace, and then type xwin to restart. HOWEVER, after selecting three of the cursors at different times, the screen blanked each time and the computer hung (or appeared to) and I couldn't get it back again. Thus I had to turn it off and restart.
