Problem in moving the installation to another machine(solved

Hi all,

I have two machines, installed puppy on one of them with some apps and configs, the installed it to a flash memory then I tried to move the flash memory to another machine, However the builtin mouse and keyboard of the second machine are not working. How to to fix this problem?

Puppy stores settings for the hardware it is booted on.
If you try to boot Puppy, installed on a USB flash drive, on a different computer. Those same settings are trying to be used.
They may not work for the different computer.

Usually network hardware is the big difference, but not the only hardware that may need different setup.

Try using menu->Setup->Mouse/keyboard Wizard to change setup for the keyboard and touchpad.

Hi Memo, Bigpup is right about Puppy storing hardware settings in its Save file/folder, however in modern Puppies this is almost entirely unnecessary. So, here is what I suggest:

Plug your flashdrive into a machine already running Puppy.

Did you use a Save file or a Save Folder?

If a folder simply go into the folder on your flash drive and delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf. That will remove the settings for video, keboard and mouse which Puppy will reset on next boot. You will also want to "Open as Text" /etc/eventmanager and make sure that "RAMSAVEINTERVAL=0" on line 9. This will keep Puppy from saving automatically.

If you used a Save file follow the above process but click on the Save file to mount it and then delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf and check /etc/eventmanager in the mounted Save file. Click again on the Save file to unmount it.

If you boot a machine from your flashdrive and let Puppy save either during use or at shutdown it will create the xorg.conf file again and you will have the same problem going from one machine to the other. Just repeat the above process and try not to save next time.

BTW, the "RAMSAVEINTERVAL=0" only affects flashdrive installs. So if you install to a harddrive from your flashdrive the new install will start saving as normal.

There have been several suggestions given above (as well as my own here:

to get your original frugal savefile working on your second PC.

But, after doing the above steps and after your frugal Puppy reboot (and
your keyboard and mouse now are working), sometimes there is no sound:

After your frugal Puppy reboot, if there is no sound (but sound
worked when you used the savefile on your first "donor" PC):

Using the ROX "house" icon and then going up one ROX window (click on
the triangle), then click on the etc directory
and rename two files in that /etc directory:
asound.state and then asound.conf
to zsound.state and zsound.conf
(that way, if for some reason, you want to restore the original files, they
are available via another first letter rename (from "z" back to "a").)

make sure the puppy frugal save takes place (to save the renamed files
with the letter "z") and then reboot.

You may have to use the "ALSA sound wizard" if your second PC has
different audio hardware: HDMI ports, etc.
