December last I downloaded and burned onto CD what I thought was the latest Puppy: BionicPup 64 7.9.7.ISO. I think it was some Beta version or something else, because it never saves updates or programs. This is good for some reasons, obviously, but for other reasons not so much.
So... what is the latest Puppy these days and where can I download it?

Yes BionicPup 64 7.9.7.ISO was a beta version, when it was still being bug fixed and tested.
The official final release is Bionicpup64 8.0
The latest official Puppy versions (final release) are always listed here:
http://puppylinux.com/
Bionicpup 8.0 (32bit or 64bit) is the newest version.
Note:
Raspup 8.2.0 is a special build for Raspberry Pi computers.
Will not work on normal x86 computers.

Actually, Blackfish, the Slacko you provided a link to is now 5 years old. The latest are LxPupSC, LxPupSC64, LxPup (Slacko version) and mistfire just posted an update to X-Slacko Slim. You'll find links to all in the Derivatives Section, http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=35
