Ontario Linux Fest

#1 Post by rarsa »

A couple of members of my local Linux user's group (KWLUG) got together with other people and started organizing a one day Linux conference.

The Ontario Linux Fest is a conference for all things Linux and Open Source.

If you live in Ontario or around (New York or Michigan) it may be a short drive to get in depth Linux content.

I'll be there for sure.

Here is an update from the organizing comitee:

Time for another update from the Ontario Linux Fest organizing
committee. Folks, I thought that I had a lot to report last time. The
week since then leads me to believe that I won't need any more sleep
before the 'fest. This week has been THAT exciting. Allow me to share
my excitement.

Research In Motion goes Platinum at Ontario Linux Fest.
Everybody recognizes the ubiquitous BlackBerry devices on the hips of
the well-connected, in offices, in movies and just about everywhere
else. In Kitchener-Waterloo it is well-known that RIM is a top-notch
place to work. Not everybody knows how widely GNU/Linux and other Free
Software is used at Research In Motion. And here is something that we
are revealing for the first time. Research In Motion will be recruiting
at Ontario Linux Fest. Bring your resume, or start the process now.

Google brings the party to Ontario Linux Fest.
Have you heard of the Google program, Summer of Code? It's a wonderful
project that gives Open Source programming jobs to students so they can
"flip bits instead of flip burgers" for a summer job. And it is just
one way that Google contributes to the Free Software community.
Google is sponsoring the Ontario Linux Fest Reception. We'll have an
awesome day at the 'fest, and then have a great time networking and
talking it over at the reception Saturday night. Join us at the
reception and meet with the speakers, sponsors, organizers and other
delegates of Ontario Linux Fest.

Robots Invade Ontario Linux Fest! Run for your lives!
Lullabot provides consulting and training the the very popular open
source CMS Drupal. And they really know their stuff. Countless core
and contributed Drupal modules are written and maintained by The 'Bots.
Lullbot is sponsoring the Ontario Linux Fest Welcome Party. And these
'bots really know how to party. We're talking bug-tracking competitions
and source-code check-in races!
http://onlinux.ca/lullabot
The welcome party will be held in a secret hideout on the Friday night
before the event and will only be open to pre-registered Ontario Linux
Fest delegates. Don't miss this chance to meet and mingle with the
speakers, sponsors and organizers before the big event.

Solarbotics is a Canadian company that makes robots (and roboticists!)
by providing robot kits and parts for the discriminating builder. They
provide fantastic instructions and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Solarbotics is sponsoring a really cool piece of schwag for the
delegates of Ontario Linux Fest 2007. You'll think of them every time
you see this gift on your desk.
http://onlinux.ca/solarbotics
Schwag quantities are limited. You'll want to arrive early.

We've confirmed two more wonderful speakers and topics for Ontario Linux
Fest. Andrew Overholt from Red Hat Canada will delight and inform us
about the Eclipse IDE
. We'll learn about the debugging and source
management features as well as some power-user tricks to improve our
productivity. The Linux Chef, Marcel Gagné will bring us up to speed on
the latest from KDE 4.0. Sarah Pullman will be teaching a session of
Yoga For Geeks to limber us up for the rest of the conference. See the
full list of confirmed speakers.

There is no reason to hold Ontario Linux Fest without you. It is the
community and the personalities and the networking that will make the
most lasting impressions on you at Ontario Linux Fest. It is the
conjunction of the strong local community and the influx of visiting
regional and international enthusiasts that will make OLF shine. We
look forward to seeing you at the event. Tell your friends and
colleagues to register, too! Register at

More updates from the Ontario linux fest organizers

#5 Post by rarsa »

Directly from the conference organizers desk:

Hello Everybody,

Two weeks to Ontario Linux Fest and we are running hard. This week saw
the addition of speakers, topics, sponsors and more space in which we
will all play.

Ontario Linux Fest Expands!
We've added two more rooms at the venue so that we can provide more
variety during the event. We'll now have as many as five topics going
on at once which means you'll have more choice, and that you'll want to
come back next year to catch some of those other great topics.

Happy Birthday to OOo
Ontario Linux Fest falls on the seventh birthday of OpenOffice.org this
year. We are fortunate and thrilled to have Louis Suárez-Potts join us
to talk about OOo 3.0! Louis has led the OpenOffice.org project since
the creation in 2000 and we couldn't ask for a more-compelling speaker
for this universally appealing project. Register now for Ontario Linux
Fest http://onlinux.ca/olfreg

Even More Speakers
We're tickled pink that Ross and John are joining us this year. Dr.
John C. Nash is the president of OCLUG (Ottawa) and will present "Linux
and Open Source Forecast through 2020" This academic presentation makes
a scientific analysis of what to expect in the next decade. Ross
Chevalier is the CTO of Novell Canada. He'll show us the wonders and
delights of XEN virtualization.

Our sponsors are connected
Silicon Mechanics has stepped up to sponsor an internet connection for
Ontario Linux Fest. Wireless at the venue is controlled and pricey. We
appreciate our sponsor providing us with a connection.

Red Hat and SQL Power go Gold at Ontario Linux Fest
Red Hat Canada and SQL Power will each be on hand as Gold Sponsors in
the exhibit hall at Ontario Linux Fest. They'll join our existing Gold
sponsors NetDirect and Groundwork Open Source as part of a diverse and
interesting commercial space.

Demonstration Lab
The Ontario Linux Fest is hosting a demo lab at our event. Do you have a
project that you would like to demo or a tutorial that you would like to
give? Send us an email at lab@onlinux.ca We'll have a dozen laptops on
which to run your VMware Server instance and demonstrate your
distribution, project, technique our other topic. We have limited time
slots for the wonderful opportunity. Get in touch with us now to book a
topic.

It's midterm time!
Gotcha! Actually it's time to brush up on your admins skills and get
that LPI certification that you've been meaning to write. The Linux
Professional Institute will administer LPI Exams at Ontario Linux Fest.
The exams will be half-price so you can enjoy the day at the Fest and
save money on your industry certs. Contact LPI for test details.
info@lpi.org

Focus Room
We've added a focus room for fascinating presentations that are intended
for a selected audience. This intimate room is ideal for the deeply
involved topics on the focus track.

So it has been a busy and productive week. Our reserved hotel blocks
have expired now, but you can still take a chance that a room will be
available. Things were filling up very quickly when I checked on
Tuesday. http://onlinux.ca/hotel

And don't forget that the only way to attend the Friday night Welcome
Party sponsored by Lullabot is to pre-pay your registration.

We are two weeks away from the Ontario Linux fest.

This a non-for profit venture organized by grass-roots members of the linux community.

They've worked hard organizing a world class conference, bringing interesting speakers, word class sponsors and of course attracting attendees ranging from "curious about linux" to kernel hackers.

Make an effort to attend. I've attended many conferences (Software, hardware, vendor sponsored, community organized, etc) and I can tell you that I'm convinced that it's the best way to increase my knowledge about a particular topic.

Evenif you cannot attend, you can support the conference by promoting the conference (as I'm shamelesly doing right now) ;)

See you at the conference.
