(taken from AboutCompizFusion Wiki page)
Compiz Fusion is the result of a merge between the well-known Beryl composite window manager and Compiz Extras, a community set of improvements to the Compiz composite window manager. Compiz Fusion aims to provide an easy and fun-to-use windowed environment, allowing use of the graphics hardware to render each individual window and the entire screen, to provide some impressive effects, speed and usefulness. The first Compiz Fusion developer release was Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 on August 13th 2007, shortly after Compiz 0.5.2 was released.
Compiz Fusion is an open-source software project, meaning anyone can use it freely and contribute.
It is important to note that Compiz and Compiz Fusion are not the same thing (see: Compiz Fusion Vs Compiz). There is close co-operation between the developers of Compiz and the developers of Compiz Fusion, though ; in fact, many Compiz Fusion developers are also Compiz developers.

Easy: Hard: (not really)
- 1. Any desktop environment(KDE, XFCE or GNOME)
2. The driver for your graphic card must be installed- nVidia drivers: [9643] [7186, 9643 and 100.14.19] also install [MesaGLUT-7.0-i686.pet]
Open source drivers: Launch PETget, install [xorg_DRI_MODULES-7.2] and [xorg_OPENGL] then restart X
- nVidia - Proprietary drivers
Intel - Opensource drivers
Code: Select all
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --allow-glx-with-composite --disable-glx-root-clipping --render-accel --composite --depth=24

ATI - Opensource drivers

- Open '/etc/profile' with a text editor comment this line:
Code: Select all
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
Now you must Reboot the computer.
- nVidia drivers: [9643] [7186, 9643 and 100.14.19] also install [MesaGLUT-7.0-i686.pet]
- [fusion-28Jul08-i686.pet] [5.1 MB]
[fusion_NLS-28Jul08.pet] [3.9 MB] i18n translations
[Older binaries here]
- [python_for_CCSM.pet] by tombh [8.6 MB] (python-2.5; pycairo-1.2.6; pygobject-2.12.3; pygtk-2.10.3)

- Start Compiz Fusion with this command:
Run 'ccsm' or 'simple-ccsm' to configure Compiz Fusion.
Code: Select all
compiz-manager
- Problem: "Another window manager is already running on screen: 0" Solution: Kill that window manager (example: 'killall xfwm4' if you're running XFCE)
Problem: There are no icons in CCSM and you don't have kde, gnome or xfce Solution: Download [hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.tar.gz] 6.3 kB (from Grafpup's repo) rename to "hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.pet" and install.
