Sound Settings Lost

After installing the ess18xx isa driver, sound works in 3.01, but on next reboot, there's an x on the speaker icon in the taskbar and the master volume control in the mixer is back to zero. If you try to reset the slider, it goes back to zero after you release it! If you reinstall the driver, it works tiil you boot again.
