Puppy 3.01 won't load

#1 Post by jap »

I currently have puppy 2.12 on a live DVD, it's one of two DVDs which came with the book " The Linux Bible" and they have 16 different distributions on them.I just insert the disk each time and choose Puppy ... when I shut down, it puts all of my configurations into a file called /pup_save.3fs, this version works wonderfully running in ram. I haven't installed it to hard drive, but it has created the /pup_sav3fs file, and it has worked so flawlessly that I wanted to try 3.01. I d/l'ed the iso, opened it up to make sure that the files were in there, (like vmlinuz, etc.),checked the md5sums, used Barry Kahler's Burniso2cd, at 8x and put it into the DVD drive to reboot ..... when it reboots, it makes it as far as:
Loading the "pup_301.sfs" main file ... copying to ram ... failed

Dumping last lines of /tmp/bootinit.log
Mount:/dev/hdd is write protected, mounting read-only ....
Mount:/dev/hdd is write protected, mounting read-only ....
reading '/mnt/dev_ro2/pup_301.sfs: Input/Output Error
Mount: Mounting /dev/loop0 on /pup_ro2 ... failed

Dumping last lines of kernel.log
<3> Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 4794
<3> Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 4795
<3> Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 4796
<3> Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 4797

Pausing for 60 seconds
Setup the Unionfs layered filesystem .... done

Perform a 'switch_root' to the new Unionfs filesystem ... kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init !
Then it just hangs there for hours ....... I have to manually shut down and start over. I get exactly the same messages if I try to run it in the CD drive, except, of course, it is called hdc ! Any help would be appreciated.

I have an HP Pavilion a1203w
1.8Ghz AMD Semperon Processor
512Mb ram
I'm currently running Beatrix Linux 2005 on the hard drive, as that's the only Linux distro that I have been successful at running for more than a week on this HP. Beatrix is no longer viable, it is outdated and not upgradeable as Watsky is out of business. I don't use WNDOZ, becuz I don't like EULA's that don't give me the right to own something I just paid for .......
I would appreciate any help that I can get. jap

Try burning another CD in case it is a faulty one. Otherwise 3.01 might not work for you, try 2.16 or 2.17 http://puppylinux.org/wikka/VersionsPuppy

Isn't there some way to check the integrity of a CD, rather than to keep burning more CDs? Something at the CLI?

In console

Code: Select all

md5sum /dev/hdc
if your optical drive is known to Puppy as hdc.

Historically, burning Puppy to CD is done at 2x or 4x.

Did you try the retro version of 3.01?

3.02 should be out in a week or two all going well . . .
Might be worth waiting for that

Did you try puppy pfix=ram with the new puppy?

Try this and create a new pup_save file.

Few days ago I have a strange behavior when trying other puppy version and retrying the previous one. I almost get crazy!

I thinkg I'm gonna start a new post ...

Here's an interesting development. I bought a Memorex DVD+-RAM 510L and all CD Disc burns fail in all software under all conditions until I burn at 16x and then it works like a champ.

I wonder if we are entering a new era of something like minimum speed=

burncd2iso automagically burned at 8x, it didn't give me any options or I would have burned at the lowest speed. THX

No, I didn't try the retro version ... I was just trying to be cheap and not burn a bunch of coasters ;).

1. Rename the pup_save.3fs file.
2. Do a manual frugal install to the hard drive by copying
these 4 files to the HD:
vmlinuz, initrd.gz, pup_301.sfs, zdrv_301.sfs
3. Edit the menu.lst to enable dual-boot Beatrix & Puppy.
4. boot Puppy from hard drive
4a. If success, problem is with the optical drive or the CD.

For what it's worth, Burniso2cd has burned many versions of Puppy onto the same DVD+RW with no problems. Burniso2cd seems to use the max speed that the drive reports the media is capable of.

You don't have to blank a DVD+RW for burniso2cd to burn a new iso onto it, but you do have to blank a DVD-RW or CD-RW first.

#1.) I tried doing that, but it didn't work ... do you want me to do it again to do all 4 of these in one session? I.E. do 1, then 2, etc.?
#2.) I've never done anything like this, so it will take me some time ;) . Do I need to make a partition strictly for Puppy for this?
#3.) I can handle that part.
#4.) OK.
#4a.) Thanks

One question here, will I be able to retrieve any of the stored information from the 2.12 pup_save file?

I can't tell you much about the technical differences between DVD+RW and DVD-RW. The DVD-RW specification is the original one, used for movies. After it had been out for a while, Sony and some other manufacturers got together and came out with the DVD+RW specification, which they consider to be technically superior. Most DVD burners these days say "Dual Format" on them because they can handle both kinds. Some can also handle the DVD-RAM, which is a third format, completely incompatible with the first two.

The only practical difference between DVD+RW and DVD-RW that I've noticed is that you don't need to blank a DVD+RW to reuse it.

If you want to learn more there are forums dedicated to the DVD, but you'll have to Google for them. :)

Renaming the pup_save file is not necessary if you boot with pfix=ram.
Put this into the menu.lst statement for test-booting Puppy from HD.

You can extract the 4 files from the iso file with Isoedit or Isomaster.
I dont know if Beatrix or Puppy 2.12 (i dont go back that far) has these
iso editing software included, but you should be able to get a .pet to add
it to your Pup2.12.

(You may also copy the 4 files from the CD, but if the CD drive or disc
is the problem, this may not work)

you dont need a separate partition, but a separate directory would be
neat.

I think isomaster is not in 2.12
here it is
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21656

If you put the 3.01 files into a new directory,
you need to specify the directory in the menu.lst statement with the switch
psubdir

Well, I burned another disk, fired it up (it worked!) and did a frugal install to the hard drive ..... now I have another dilemma; the message box said to use the following in the Grub menu :

Code: Select all

title Puppy Linux 301 Frugal
Rootnoverify (hd0,4)
kernel /puppy301/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psubdir=puppy 301
initrd /puppy301/initrd.gz
No matter how much I try to find any mistakes, it will not come up on the grub splash screen. If someone would post a copy of their grub entry, I'd appreciate it ;) Thanks

If the title "Puppy Linux 3.01 Frugal"
cannot even come up on a splash screen,
you may be booting from a different Grub which has its own
menu.lst somewhere else.

Once you found the right menu.lst, this should work,
assuming you got the files in hda5/puppy301.

title puppy3.01 frugal on hda5/puppy301
rootnoverify (hd0,4)
kernel (hd0,4)/puppy301/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 pmedia=idehd psubdir=puppy301
initrd (hd0,4)/puppy301/initrd.gz

note there are no excess spaces, and the kernel line is all one line

I have two partitions, one has BeatrIX 2005 (outdated and non-updateable) which will allow me to get on the internet and update the /boot/grub/menu.lst, and the partition that I put Puppy into, which was a defective Debian install.
Let me explain something about this HP box. I bought it about two years ago, brand new. it was equipped with M$ XP, on a 40Gb HD. I put in a 160Gb HD and installed various flavors of Linux, but they all went TU within a week or so of installing. The screen froze up, apps wouldn't load, OS wouldn't load up, etc. The only distro that has worked is an old BeatrIX which is no longer able to be upgraded. I also tried wiping out the XP and installing to that partition, in case it was a defective HD. I can only run live CDs of Linux and BSDs, HD installs will not work. Puppy had been working so well, with the pup_save, I thought I had finally found a distro that I could install to HD, but now it's starting to do the freeze-up thing too, when I boot up the CD.

pupshock wrote:Once you found the right menu.lst, this should work,
BeatrIX shows up on theGrub splash screen, so I have been editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst in BeatrIX. I could see if I can find the /boot/grub/menu.lst in the Puppy install, if that is what you meant, not sure I can get into that though.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

If that doesn't work, is there a way to wipe the whole 18Gb partition (defective Debian) and give it all to Puppy? If that is possible, would Puppy install the Grub to the MBR? Just looking for other options if I can't get the Grub to work this way ;) .
