How sad is that?So what is this ultimate secret to faster and reliable Windows? Simple. Reinstall the whole system from scratch (or a solid image) periodically and keep a close eye on the junk that you install in the interim. It really is that simple. That was my plan under XP and it’ll be my plan under Vista. I’m going to accept that over time, no matter how careful I am and no matter how restrained I am when it comes to installing beta and trial software, my system is going to kludge up with the detritus of normal day to day running.

It's always been like that with 'doze. In truth, lots of other distros are badly bent, too. Badly written code running badly written apps is bound to cause problems - not necessarily the same ones with different distros. Add that to the fact that a statistical mathematical analysis published twenty years ago proved that seven lines of code was about the maximum permissible for complete debugging ( I'm not a mathematician, so didn't follow the detailed proof - we were worried about automated control of nuclear reactors at the time!). What price fifty million lines of code?
The trick is to know enough to keep things running, which is what this chap on zdnet is saying. More people know how to 'fix' 'doze because it's been around longer, the nomenclature of files is closer to Complete Plain English, inter alia, and they are more accessible - that is NOT an endorsement of 'doze, though. The arcane language and structure of Linux has never been addressed - it is beyond the ken of normal mortals and will remain so until some genius grabs it by the neck and converts it into something comprehensible. Software developers prefer to refer to themselves as 'engineers' in the present culture but constantly fail to observe the most fundamental mantra - K.I.S.S. And not just in engineering - the most fundamental Laws of Physics that control our universe often have elegant simplicity, the most widely known conspires to be complete in only five symbols.
The relative appeal of Puppy lies in its apparent simplicity - at least in its presentation to users, who may have graduated (or not) in subjects other than IT. Indeed, plumbers and refuse collection officers are some of the most valued members of contemporary society and can equally expect that society to enable them to use available technologies.
As for giving real money to Mr Gates - how stupid can Joe Public be?!

For me, that's true regardless of what OS I have. In fact, I've become worse since using Puppy. Puppy is a disposable operating system, one that creates no pollution upon disposal and one which is free and easy to replace. This encourages me to be very rough on it. Much more rough than I was back in Windows.I’m going to accept that over time, no matter how careful I am and no matter how restrained I am when it comes to installing beta and trial software, my system is going to kludge up with the detritus of normal day to day running.
Not that that's a bad thing.

Here is where partimage comes quite handy.
I don't use windows at home but sometimes my sons do. (less and less now days).
I created a partimage image of a clean windows configured and with their favourite applications so when it slows down, gets infected or otherwise, we just restore the image.
(all the data is stored in a diferent partition)

How to re-install puppy:

5. configure GRUB

Your Done!
How to re-install Winblows (or at least in my method):
1. Copy all personal files onto another storage medium
2. Boot from Windows disk
3. let windows kill your computer, er, install to your hard drive (Takes 30+ min)
4. Let Microsoft know every personal detail about you (filling out the registration form)
5. Boot windows
6. Configure your net connection
7. Run Windows Update to get all the 125 updates + 2 service packs to fix bugs in Windows
Then Windows dies on you. Thanks alot Bill Gates, you rule the computer business but are awful at making Windows in the first place, keep up the good, er, awful work.
Now which would you rather install: Puppy Linux or Windows?

How I "reinstall" Puppy:
Boot using the pfix=ram option (I added an extra entry for grub, so I get a menu with the normal settings and the pfix=ram version, among other things).
Delete or rename my current pup_save.2fs file.
Reboot and opt to save.
