good move, MU. right now the ones posted by puppian above are the only external links. if I add more, I'll mark them with blue, like this:
  • Barrage (Version ???, released Aug 05, 2005) - barrage.pup, 829 KB
    - A violent ''point-and-click'' shooting game with nice effects -

Could the information be available and edited on the wiki?

It would allow more people to work on it . . .

New index of Additional Software ...

#23 Post by ricstef »

Deshlab,
I really like this software index that you've put together. It seems that the forum has moved since you did this work and now the links don't work. You are pointing to "http://www.murga.org/~puppy/" but the info has moved to: "http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/".

The last part of the the link seems to still work on any links that I tried.

hth. :)
Richard.

Fixed. The forum actually moved some time ago, but John left a redirect so the links didn't break. He recently removed the redirect as it's been some time, so now some of the bad links are showing up. Not a big problem, and easily fixed with find-replace. Direct links to attachments, on the other hand, are not such a simple problem. The forum upgrade changed how they're handled, so find-replace isn't good enough. The redirect didn't help either. That's why there were problems with the wiki and the dotpup downloader a while back. Manually searching for them to fix it wasn't fun, but it brought back some memories from when dotpup was brand spankin' new :)

I PM'd Deshlab a few months ago to tell him that I was convinced that his index was superior to mine and asking if he was interested in updating his index. He never replied.

Making an index that size, with just the tiny forum compose window, was a monumental effort. If anyone else wants to take on the job of bringing it up to date and maintaining it, PM me or John Murga.

Whoops, I didn't fix it all, just this page. Didn't realize there were two pages. It's late, or early. I'll finish tomorrow. G'night.

Okay, I fixed the rest. This index was very handy when I was correcting dotpup links in the wiki, since these are all links to the posts, not the packages. I could find them in the index, then get to the post with the attachment, and fix the link much faster than just searching through the forum and wading through results referring to support issues.

The PDF utilities do not seem to be working correctly. Most of them fail
outright and pdftohtml produces a series of lines and nothing else.

Are there updated versions that work with 2.6, please?

Roughly what percentage of these are available from within the Puppy Software Installer '07 ?

I was wondering, do pet packages go in here also?

One thing that would make it easier, have a way to change the "sort by" order to "size-descending".

So people could snarf the 10 and 20 megabyte files first.

Maybe put pre-installed bookmarks in the Browsers that point to the repos,
like the way Opera points to Google and Amazon and Pricegrabber.

Just a thought. If it's already been done never mind....

Bump - Update needed

#32 Post by Aitch »

BUMP

Having just done a Search post,

& since the originator of this thread hasn't been around for a couple of years, does anyone know how to update this,
as he obviously used some sort of db toolkit?

It really needs updating/sifting/archiving IMHO

I don't know how to update it, but I certainly think it could be improved. There are valuable programs that have been mentioned in threads that are not listed here. Openbox, for example, doesn't seem to be mentioned. And I'm not sure that the fluxbox linked here is the latest pup available.

Maybe I can help?

#34 Post by bvjones59 »

I have a little db experience (ONLY a little) but if someone else can help me collect all the programs, I can probably get them input.

We definitely could use an up-to-date, centralized location for all the dotpups. It's frustrating to me as a newbie, to be unable to just grab them from the installer. And to have to drill down through several layers of forum posts is enough to make me cry - or yell - or something like that. I still haven't been able to locate the sfs programs mentioned in the installer help page.

Anyway, I'd be glad to help Puppy in that way, but one of the "oldtimers" will need to help me at least in collecting the data.

hi bvjones59

can I point you to a thread and a few links as a starter

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31074

http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads

http://www.puppylinux.org/node/9**

there are others, like

caneri's .ca & mu's .de sites as well as hosts of others, but no db

If you made a start by creating a post calling for help, maybe, stating what you know/can do/see as the problem, that might get things rolling

From my perspective, one year in, there are experienced people who can/do create pup/pet files in the forum, which get mirrored if popular, however, no-one AFAIK puts them under headings for puppy versions, so it's a bit of a mishmash [old puppians seem to know/accept this/modify according to demand/postings, which is very chaotic for noobs & even for me!]

I'll certainly do some more researching for links if you want

Aitch
Edit:
OOH, looks like someone's [??] worked on this** since I posted back in may but it didn't make the news!!
Still needs a forum announcement/work though, like my search thread IMHO

Right On

#36 Post by bvjones59 »

Wow!
I never got anything to show in that page before, and mostly didn't even find it when searching.

I still get nothing when clicking on the first link you provided, but the other two both produce the same, filled-out page.

Perhaps the first and best thing to do would be to UN-sticky this "New Index" which really ISN'T, and instead make a new sticky that gives the two functional links. The second thing would be to fix whatever the problem is with the main tab link that keeps it from loading all the categories. And third, perhaps Barry can update the page that explains how the installer works, to include a functional link to that dotpup page.

As I get time, I'll browse through the links there and see what can be done to improve the cataloging. I agree it would be helpful to have it clear WHICH puppy version the various pups/pets cooperate with.

Hi bvjones59

The first link is a forum thread

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31074

of similar topic, which works ok for me, I checked

Of the other 2, I occasionally get the 2nd; '/node/9' not display properly, but if you click on 'software' it opens ok

As for the comment about BarryK and editing, - www.puppylinux.org is a community run/maintained site

This site is maintained/created by tombh, but I have editorial status along with Hairy Will & a few others, but anyone can register and edit/post in the wiki

http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki

so perhaps you could suggest it there as a blogpost or just a comment, which will appear on the home page scroller

Yes, I did discover that clicking on "software" on the Downloads page reliably brings up the listing - but on earlier visits it did not occur to me to try: I simply assumed the page was still under construction.

No insult intended about BK updating a page - it sure LOOKS like Barry is the only one editing it! I am referring to the page you get when clicking the "PET introduction" link in Package Manager, http://www.puppylinux.com/development/p ... gement.htm. It is marked at the bottom as copyrighted by Barry, and people are requested to please LINK to it, not cut/paste into their own pages. On that page (which we newbies tend to get to first), there is mention of dotpups and squash files but no links to the new downloads page. That page also has a link that takes you to http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html, which introduces PET packages, but that page hasn't been updated since Feb 2007 and puppy 2.14.

These are the two pages I was referring to in my previous post. ARE they editable by the rest of us? I would be glad to take a stab, and send the results back as an attachment for one of you to accept/reject before updating.

Aha, .....now I understand :)

This is BarryK's 'personal server' webpages, Puppylinux.com whereas the Community site in which the /node/9 - downloads/software is on, is Puppylinux.org

So, yes, Barry is the only one to edit those pages, and the only [quiet] link to the Community downloads is the very last listing of 'Alternative download sites', just above 'Check download integrity' on your second link
* Various Puppy-derivatives can be downloaded via here:

http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=2
What may be possible is to bring this to Barry's attention by posting a bit in his blog

http://www.puppylinux.com/blog/

I have just recently posted there on the scsi booting topic, which has recently come up again

Barry has said he's happy to receive constructive comments in his blog, as he doesn't always spot things in the forum/wiki pages
[How he achieves all that he does, amazes me constantly!! :) ]
so there you have it
~part of the chaotic development of the various websites includes the ongoing updating of the Community site, after recent [2 mths ago?] spam attacks on all the puppy sites, Barry's, the mirrors, the Murga-linux forum, and the new Community site built by tombh was hurriedly developed whilst this was being sorted
As Barry himself concedes - no rules apply, its for fun!!

Hope that gives some insight, and as far as the community goes - 'muck in' is the normal way of doing things IMHO :D
Every little helps - given a bit of common sense

I totally agree Aitch...most of the software in this catalogue will no longer work...it must have wasted a lot of new users time and should really have been removed long ago .

Good idea for a sticky tho...but who will maintain it?
