Wine with Puppy 3.01?

#1 Post by jhecht »

Hi all,

I have a smoothly working install of Puppy 3.01 that I'd like to add Wine to, so my new roomie can run some Windows biz apps with it. Could someone tell me what the best way to do this would be?

Alternatively, I own a copy of Win4Lin and could install it, and Win 98 or Win 2k to run the apps. The Puppy computer has only a 450 MHz CPU and 256 meg o' ram, so it's not really suitable for a Win XP install. Which would be the better approach?

Thanks (as always) to everyone for your help!

OK - I installed sdl, and then Wine from the 'bugs' depo.
Both went in OK, and I now have a Wine Config menu item.

But I also got the notice below about missing stuff - what to do?

Thanks!

Lot of work to get Wine working with Puppy.. you may want to try our http://www.pcpuppyos.com for a version with it integrated.

Download the wine-9.52.tgz for Slackware from http://www.winhq.com

When you get it, open a prompt and type

Code: Select all

tgz2pet filename
Then click the resulting .pet.

Always works for me in 3.01.

Try the first one first. Then if it doesn't work, try another one. I've never installed sdl to my knowledge, but I have installed a lot, so I could of forgotten.

Thank you, have you ever gotten the mozilla extension to work? Wine will download / install it, but it still doesn't work.

The wine from here, open .exe file automatically, does not need sdl, also has links for opengl.

Dear all,

The latest slackware version - 0.9.59 - works fine in Puppy 3.01 with the SDL libs. I unpacked it, saved my old .58 (libs and executables in /usr/lib/wine, /usr/lib and /usr/bin) just as a precaution, and then copied over the files into their proper locations. Prior to actually running a Win executable, I ran it winecfg, which is recommended. No problems - and no need to panic. If it doesn't work, there is something wrong with the state of your Puppy configuration, most likely deleted or missing libs. I have gone through this upgrade execise at least five times and have never experienced a genuine problem. What may be the case with some installations is that the $HOME/.wine dir contains bad registry information. If you suspect that to be the case, simply delete or rename the /root/.wine directory (hidden) and run winecfg. It will create a new ./wine dir and a fresh registry.

With kind regards,
vovchik

I've made some progress, I got Wine 0.9.59 from WineHQ also gecko. and when I launch Star Wars Galaxies it does show all servers are up etc. HTML content, but it goes away during the patch sometimes so it's not quite 100% there. also there are window frames around the launchpad and patch log as seen below. Any suggestions?

Also this is probably just a minor deal to some, but is there any way to force all applications into being windowed? or at least switch between fullscreen and windowed? I'm currently using XP mode, should I be using 2000 or a 9x instead?
