Loading pupsave file crashes xwindows

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

when i try to load puppy from a pupsave file it crashes xwindows.
this has occured on many versions of puppy and on three different machines, irregardless of where i store the pupsave. (NTFS or EXT2)
do i need to create a fat 32 partition to put pupsave in??
sometimes it will go to xvesa (rarely) but never to xorg
i run lighthouse puppy and love it!!!!! would love to be able to save tho.....also running wnop 0.2 right now on my wife`s machine..love it too..Barry ,..Puppy is AMAZING....small, light, fast, and friendly...
tried `em all, big and small,
from ark to zen-walk,.....and
Puppy beats `em ALL

worked for a few boots :D ...but back to the same prob.. :(
X still crashing on boot..sometimes the nox bootcode works, and
running xorgwizard only works 50% or less...soooo...
pleze splain (or guide me to an explanation of) "fsck" your pupsave?
love puppy but need to leard more as i am a noob to linux...(6 mths)..
if i hadnt found puppy i prob would have stayed with "Doze" as the other distros just didnt offer the speed i had been drawn to....(and i dont like KDE(sorry))..(i use Enlightenment, my wife uses Compiz)
but puppy is amazing..tiny fast and amazingly complete..I`ll happily use the "out of the box" version..till i learn to save my customizations,(soon i hope :D
any ideas? :?:

fsck (aside from being a geeky euphemism) is a partition checking tool. To use it, you'd boot with pfix=ram so-as not to load the pup_save.2fs file. Then you'd mount the partition (with the icon on the desktop which says "drives") and open a terminal there (either use cd /mnt/hda1/ (with the correct path), or get a file manager window open where you want the terminal, then press the backquote (`) key).

Now run this:
fsck pup_save.2fs

That's the simple way to do it. There are extra options and stuff, but I'm not very familiar with using fsck so running fsck --help would probably explain better than I could.

A question: Are you shutting down properly? As in from the menu? If the machine isn't shut down correctly it won't automatically start X the next boot (run startx to do that).

You might want to try a fresh pup_save.2fs file. If that doesn't work, see if the standard Puppy does the same thing (to help track down where the fault is).
