Xvesa/Xorg both fails

#1 Post by Salix »

Originally I chose Xvesa after the full hd install and that worked fine but the console after closing (see "exit to prompt" or "power off") was an unreadable mix of blue, yellow and white pixels.

So I decided to change over Xorg. As I did my mouse got some shadows (practically I see 3 arrows now) and the console after closing the Xserver is completely unreadable. It is a blank black screen.

1) How can I change from Xorg to Xvesa? "X server chooser wizzard" says that from "Xorg Video Wizzard" I can change to Xvesa. I started it but I just can't see anything.

2) How can I repair Xvesa and/or Xorg to make the console after closing readable?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Puppy :)

Hit the 3 keys
CTRL ALT Backspace
at once.
This exits X aand drops you to console.
Here, type:
xorgwizard

When it finished, type:
xwin

to start X from new.

Done. I got the black blank screen as described earlier. I can't see the console prompt.

Done. But I can't see a letter from it.

As I do not see anything from the console I have no idea what replies were there. But I pressed a few more Enter and I retyped xwin. I got back to the GUI but
- it is still the Xorg
- it is 640x480 instead of 800x600
- the mouse has shadows (3 arrows all the time)
- I get blank screen at "exit to prompt" and "power off"

My problem hasn't been solved.

Regards,

Salix

ok, a hard one.
Then please power off while you are in X.
Puppy creates a file, and should detect at next boot, that X was not shutdown properly (because that would delete the file).
Now it should offer you the prompt, before X starts.
As X was not started yet, you should see it.

There try the mentioned commands again.

Another way:

As you ran Xvesa once, you have settings already.
Now do this:
open a console-window.
Type:

Code: Select all

cd /usr/X11R7/bin
rm -f X
ln -s X Xvesa
X ist just a symbolic link to one of the 2 xservers.
So you delete the link, at create a new one to Xvesa.
Then after restarting X or the computer you should have Xvesa again.

To avoid to get a corrupted console:
this depends.
What graficscard do you have?
For savage cards there is an update availabe.
The old driver simply has bugs.
In some cases also the "correct" resolution/color-depth might help.

to change the resolution for Xorg without the wizard:

edit the file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

At bottom the resolution is set.
Change it to your needs and restart.

Resolution is okay again. Trying to set Xvesa instead of the Xorg. Success. I run Xvesa again. Only the console is problematic...
