Hot news from Vietnam & Merry Christmas - Happy New Year!

#1 Post by Hacao »

Hi all,

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

I'm come back.

Hot news from Vietnam here:

* Windows & Office ($38-license) vs Hacao Linux ($2-labor cost)

“This is the answer from Hoang le Minh (Vice director of HCMC Post &
Telecom service - Government) to a reporter from Echip questioning him about the
Classmate PC project from Intel and the possible choice of Hacao linux
as operating system (instead of Windows). In summary : the CMPC has some
physical limitations (256 MB Ram, 1 GB Flash memory) which prevents it
from effectively using Windows operating system. Moreover the cost of
Windows operating system would add 38$ to the overall bill, while
installing Hacao Linux would only cost 2$ (labor cost) per CMPC. Tests
made by Hacao Co. show that Hacao Linux is very appropriate to use with
the CMPC in Vietnam (target public would be primary school pupils.

Always great to hear your news Hacao.
I really enjoy Distrowatch. The controversies alone are fun.

Puppy originally was an English only distro.
Many of us encouraged Barry to support other languages.
He has.
Hacao is one of our great successes.

Well done.
Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year

Very attractive, Hacao (don't ask which one :D ). Thanks for the update.

And congratulations!

The price is quite close to the US$200 "affordable PC" set as goal here in Manila by the govermnent ICT commission. I've been deploying safepup for net-booting in computer labs:

Barry, creator of Puppy Linux, is now working on "Dingo", a Puppy build for these tiny-footprint computers for education. Visit Barry's blog: http://puppylinux.com/blog

Other news: The eee PC sells here in Manila for a little more than US$400, but it has 512 MB RAM, 4G storage and videocam. I wonder how the eee is priced there in Vietnam?

See the eee vbios trick here. Have you an Xorg solution?

Wanted : Classmate

#5 Post by frankpky »

Hi,

I like to fiddle around with "gadgets", Puppy Linux and any distro of Linux in general (but I'm no hacker/geek/ or whatever). I have tried a couple of eBoxes up to now and would like to get my hands a Classmate, an eee and a OLPC/XO.

The problem for me is that I'm in Mauritius, Indian Ocean (which is next to nowhere  ) and only the eee is available locally. I do not think we would be considered "poor enough" to be entitled to receive the OLPC/XO either. Can anyone have any idea of where I could find suppliers for the Classmate and OLPC/XO ?

@ Hacao : Is there a supplier in Vietnam who would be willing to ship 1 unit of the Classmate to Mauritius if I decide to purchase one ?

Thanks.

Francois.

Francois.
You could easily get OLPC XO from eBay: ( http://search.ebay.com/olpc-xo ) and, till someone puts Puppy on it (and you don't like the default Sugar desktop), switching to something like Xfce is trivial ( http://bc.tech.coop/blog/080130.html ).

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not thought about it because usually US online vendors would not ship to where I am (ie Mauritius). I've checked your link and have asked sellers whether they's ship worldwide. I'm still awaiting their replies before I bid.

thanks.
