Dotpup files don't work in Dingo?

#1 Post by divisionmd »

Hello,

I cant install .pup files to Dingo?

When trying to do that i get a message telling me i firs need to install:

1. dotpuphandler
2. puppybasics

Then after i have installed that (PET files) when i click on a .pup file it prompts out a x window with the .pup files name. But dont install the pup file.

When i try to launch it manually from a bash window "dotpuprox.sh" it types out this:

dotpuprox.sh Midnight.Commander.Plus.pup
/usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh: line 26: gettext: command not found
/usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh: line 27: gettext: command not found
Archive: /Downloads/PUPS/Midnight.Commander.Plus.pup
testing: dotpup.sh OK
testing: mc-plus.tar.gz OK
testing: md5sum.txt OK
No errors detected in compressed data of /Downloads/PUPS/Midnight.Commander.Plus.pup.
/usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh: line 83: gettext: command not found
/usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh: line 84: gettext: command not found
/usr/sbin/dotpuprox.sh: line 85: gettext: command not found

What do to?

Thanks for help,

Best regards,
Johan

My opinion is Dingo is an alpha release and your expectations should not exceed alpha release expectations. As an alpha user you are a tester and at this stage of development your feedback and problems should be with the developers. Not wanting to sound harsh, although I probably do.

I don't expect an alpha release to be around very long and debugging between users doesn't evolve the release maturity unless the developers take notice and do something about it.

As far as Midnight Commander Plus, I'm very familiar with it. It was released in version 1 as a ROX-Filer app. It needs a slight modification for newer releases. I'm more than happy to repackage it for you and make it available as a tar.gz which will install with a simple command.

The only question I have is does Dingo still have the /root/my-applications/bin and /root/my-applications/lib directories?

Bruce

Answer is yes. Their called out in id.so.conf and profile too.

I am pretty sure, I read in the blog, that Dingo is switching to be a dotpet only, because of incompatibilities with older dotpups. Cannot find it right now.

ok thanks Bruce!

Would be nice if you could package the midnight commander .pup to a .pet file instead.

.pet files works great on Dingo Alpha.

Also if you could describe how you convert .pup to .pet would be nice to learn.

All about PET packages:
http://www.puppylinux.com/development/createpet.htm

The next release of Dingo will have the 'gettext' utility.

Sorry I'm a day late here.

I've uploaded the repackaged mc-plus by AlienX.

Changes are

It's no longer a /root/my-rox application, run it from the CLI as mc [args]

The orginal mc-plus deleted /bin/cpio each time it ran. This version does not do that.

Comments

Your Puppy may have newer versions of cpio, dpkg-deb and rpm2cpio than those included in this package. This probably won't present a problem because /root/my-applications/bin will likely come later in the path statement than the locations of the aforementioned files.

However you can check your Puppy for the existence of these three files and if they exist, they are probably newer and you can delete the ones in the mc-plus package.

mc-plus is mostly key driven and keys work better in mrxvt than in rxvt.

Installation

Download mc-plus.tar.gz to /
Open console
# cd /
# tar -xvzf mc-plus.tar.gz

HMMMMMMMMMM!

My Super-Ex (61yrs), three years ago went to somewhat "computing for elder people" (ehem, I don't know why) because she got "a computer" with Win2000.

She learned some DOS commands for text editing (insert). Bill Gates' head may have become red for a year or so.

In ROX a click on a tar.gz file opens xarchive, if I'm not wrong, which gives you some options to extract the content.
Shortly, unzipping and untaring from the cli gives the same result, an unzipped or new folder (maybe some files...).

No offense, I don't understand funny pastebin.

Thanks, Bruce B!

I downloaded your file, untarred and I was in business with mc.

I have grown accustomed to using mc on many systems at home and at work - linux, AIX and even Windows. It's a nice consistent environment across all of them. My brain and fingers have learned some very useful key sequences and I was really sorry that mc didn't seem to be available on Puppy 4.
