wxdfast: wx-based file downloader

#1 Post by muggins »

http://dfast.sourceforge.net/
wxDownload Fast (also known as wxDFast) is an open source download manager. It is multi-platform and builds on Windows(2k,XP), Linux and Mac OS X(binary still not available). Besides that, it is a multi-threaded download manager. This means that it can split a file into several pieces and download the pieces simultaneously.

Here is another downloader, which can resume interrupted dloads, and which can be integrated with flashgot, in either firefox, or seamonkey.

However it requires the wxGtk libs to be installed. These can be downloaded from here, or this location.[/b] (3.8Mbytes)

To integrate with firefox/seamonkey download & install flashgot-0.7.7.xpi , then restart browser, select
Tools->Flashgot->More Options , then from the DownloadManager list, select "wxDownload Fast" . Then if you right-click a file link, then choose Flashgot Link, this will transfer the download to wxdfast.

Hi Dingo,

I didn't realise that the original place, where I lodged wxGTK-2.8.7-i486.pet, required a login, so I've uploaded it to rapidshare.com, and changed the download link above. So you might want to change your link, for wxGTK-2.8.7-i486.pet, to reflect this.

Also, on your http://puppylover.netsons.org site, I notice you've a link for aria2 under Aria. I just thought I'd clarify that Aria is a gui downloader, available here:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 39a314601a

Aria, like curl, dx4 & wxdfast, can be integrated with Flashgot & firefox/seamonkey browsers.

Whereas Aria2 is a commandline downloader. (Although it has several GUI frontends available as well) .AFAIK Aria2 & wxdfast are the only two linux downloaders with metalink support.

Also, urlgfe is up to v1.0.2, available here:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ch&id=7644

Hope this clarifies somewhat, more than it confuses, cheers.

thanks for mentioning them.

there's also DownThemAll!, a Firefox extension for downloading that supports Metalink.

Metalink Checker is another cross platform command line Metalink downloader. it's full featured and can also verify PGP signatures.

KGet in KDE4 also supports Metalink.

wxdfast has issues

#6 Post by thebeaky »

I tried this wxdfast, but what I found as I tried to download a new distro (109 M) that it seemed to dowload this whole file into ram before saving it where I had told it to put it.
This meant the puppyspace bar was full. Eventually the download finished and it saved it where it was supposed to go. but only after clogging my memory which it needn't have done if it had saved it as a ".part" file. where I wanted it (in a seperate partition).

is there a workaround for this?
or do any of the others allow for restarting, and save it as they download?

system details

puppy 4.2
dell inspiron 2600 laptop.
live cd with (at the time 256m pupsave, now increased) on a flash drive.

Aria2c

#7 Post by thebeaky »

Hey so after posting the previous,

I decided to try to check a few other managers.

aria2c seems to be doing what I was asking for.

no cloggage from, and from what I can tell it seems to have a second file to help it resume later in the same place, which seems handy.

took me a few seconds to work out what all of the info in the window was, but makes good sense now.

I think I will stick with aria for now. if I have problems will probably report them somewhere.
