Happily using Puppy 3.01

#1 Post by idolguy99 »

I'm happily using Puppy 3.01 (installed on my HD) for all my basic tasks. I've downloaded Puppy 4.0. What would be the primary advantages of 4.0 over 3.01?

Thanks,

If everything you need works fine with 3.01, there is no pressing reason to upgrade. However, some hardware support such as printing with CUPS is greatly improved in 4.00. Also, the new version has a more polished look and feel, in case you want to impress your friends.

Thanks,
Puppy 3.01
- is truly Slackware compatible
- Use gtk1& gtk2 which is great because most programs are still gtk1
- Uses qt3
- Better wireless, clipboard, free memory status at this point
puppy 4.0
- can use Slackware, but really should be updated to use it.
-Uses qt4 most application in the future will use qt4 but right now qt3 is the most widely used
-uses gtk2 only,
- faster and smaller
-updated programs
-nicer look

thats about it

As long as you use defaultsettings.
You can of course use all those addons like ezpup to make Puppy 3 look very cool.

Another reason for Puppy 3 is localization.
There are many updates around, that allow to localize Puppy 3.
Puppy 4 misses those.
I had no look yet, but are there utf-8 glibc locale available?
In Puppy 3, I could simply extract those from Slackware :)

However, you of course can use both in parallel on your system with an additional grub-entry or running from CD :)

If you like it, and it does what you want, then stick with it. Mind you, 3.02 looks promising....

Quick note about puppy4 being gtk2 only. This is not completely true. You can install gtk1 from the puppy3 repository, and then puppy4 has gtk1 compatibility.

You can see that in this topic:
