Yep everyone get out there and support Firefox!
As to your question Lobster, I think the new OS will be the website that captures everything correctly. The ultimate customizable homepage where you get your social networks, web apps, email, rss and whatever all in one place. The browser itself will become unimportant, as long as it meets the web spec required and thus can view the pages you want. It won't matter if its Firefox, Safari or IE. And from that it also won't matter if it's Windows, OS X or Linux.
But for now... Go Firefox!

Other Browser News
Speaking of browsers, CNET recently gave the latest Opera a 10 out of 10, a pretty amazing score for CNET. I will probably keep using Firefox mostly, but I have been following Opera since its inception and will keep giving it a try...

Now you can understand why M$ was determined to destroy Netscape, as in this famous quote: "We'll cut off their air supply." (They succeeded, despite tiresome interference by the DOJ antitrust division.)Lobster wrote:...90% of my time on the computer is spent in a browser . . .

No, the browser isn't the new OS, but it is about the most important user interface and necessarily ties in with various media players. Give it the ability to run applications, regardless of where code resides, and most users can ignore the OS. If customer lock in depends on user interface, and not big technological advances, certain sellers of proprietary products are in trouble.
BTW: I've been running Firefox 3 regularly, ever since they got past the "minefield" beta. This hasn't stopped me from using Opera for things like this post. It still starts faster than FF, and that is important to me. It is also a less tempting target for exploits. Don't know if this is due to the code, or smaller market share.
The important thing is that both these browsers use open standards. If you want to continue to have a choice, support them. Warn web sites which don't comply their pages could be translated into Borkish.

Hello
Been using FF3 for a while on my pcPuppyos install.
Works great for me so far...Seems to take a few styling cues from
its sister Flock. Still not as fast as the slimmer browsers, but on par
with Opera speed wise, and faster than Flock. Ran it side by side
with 2 and 3 is faster, but they were sharing an internet connection,
so that might not be an objective test...

Beyond the bare Operating System for computers...the browser is"the" software....
It is the software that you are hacked through and by...
But if you use Puppy then (as a live CD ...closed) then hackers are or may only find very limited success, if any.
Java script makes the browser very hackable... if you think that linux will prevent that...forget that notion.
FF is modular with email and 3rd party addons.
The addons are what make FF puppular....
The less frills the less hackability ie. Dillo browser.
Currently using Opera 950 = thanks the to person who put the pet out there...
I am liking it as a browser, it is less hackable than FF, IMHO.
I dont like the email SW intergation. HTML email access like hotmail make this SW unnecessary by many IMHO.

You also didn't mention irc chat, newsgroups, and the superb email client built into Opera.

Opera is the only browser I have come across that can zoom a webpage properly so I get some use of my widescreen monitor. This isn't new for the latest release, but it is the main reason I use Opera.
This site too will refuse to use the full width of my monitor (1680x1050) in Firefox or Konqueror!
Thankfully Opera can fill in for poor webdesign!!

Is someone doing a Firefox Official Release 3 PET for Puppy 4?
I've been using a PET based on Firefox 3 Beta 5--which updated fine to Release Candidate 2--but it installed with messages about a lot of missing dependencies. Info on it is here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 1&start=30
Although it works mostly, sometimes it crashes and I'm wondering if someone has or is working on a PET based on the final release out today.
Thanks for any information you can provide.

I got it working, but wouldn't do itColonel Panic wrote:'Fraid I didn't keep my "promise" - I downloaded FF3 and am using it with so far no problems. Can't get Flash working in it yet though.
Basically it slowed down the pc, a lot, and my pc is a newer pc with lots of memory and cpu etc. Then when I resetX it froze, I was forced to reboot, then it still was mucked up when it rebooted because I saved the session so I wouldn't lose everything I had, then I had to reboot as "puppy fix=ram" load the pupsave file and copied what I wanted then deleted the pupsave file.
I really do think its because of all the missing libs, I might work on it in a week or 2.

If you want to get it working at your own risk, download the latest version of flash and extracted it.
go to usr/lib/firefox/plugins and place the flash lib in the folder.
restart Firefox and test it at adobe.

I just don't recommend flash at this point.

Some people who are downloading directly are having problems . . .
So make sure you are using the FF3 pet already mentioned

You're probably right, the trouble is that so many sites depend on it.ttuuxxx wrote:I got it working, but wouldn't do itColonel Panic wrote:'Fraid I didn't keep my "promise" - I downloaded FF3 and am using it with so far no problems. Can't get Flash working in it yet though.

About the Firefox 3 world record attempt " I guess they had 8 million downloads, But flash has had in the past 14-15 million downloads in a day, well its 1/4 the size so its easier on the servers. But as browser downloads go I don't know the statics on a single day of downloads.
