Trouble installing SCIM m17n in Puppy 3.01
Rameshi,
the already compiled celtx binary works straight away with pup3 & pup4. (It is glibc incompatible with pup2). Anyone with p3, or p4, can just download the 19M file, extract it anywhere, (it extracts to celtx subdirectory), change to this subdirectory, and run ./celtx on the commandline, or click on the file celtx.

Hello, I'm having a problems with puppy 4, gtk1 programs and utf-8.
I posted the problem here
and Aitch suggested that I ask on this thread too.

I'm copying here the text of the original message:
Hello,
I'm writing some gtk1 programs (too long to explain here why I cannot use gtk2, but really I cannot) to be deployed under puppy 4.0. That's relatively easy, I installed gtk1 from the puppy 3 official repository and my programs work.
However, I also need to set the language to utf-8 (e.g, instead of LANG=es_ES I need LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 ).
The locale wizard doesn't offer any locale with uft-8, so I just got the locales from the glibc-i18n package of vector linux and installed es_ES.utf8 under /usr/lib/locales (and pt_BR.uft8 since es_ES.utf8 has some softlinks there)
However UTF-8 doesn't seem to be supported by Xlib:Code: Select all
# locale -a C en_AU en_CA en_DK en_GB en_NZ en_PH en_US es_ES es_ES.utf8 POSIX pt_BR.utf8 # locale LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_TIME="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_NAME="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="es_ES.UTF-8" LC_ALL=
In fact all non-ascii characters are garbled (I use utf-8 but the display interprets them as iso-8859-1)Code: Select all
# ./myprogram Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C
So, after a little googling, I took the definitions for en_US.UTF-8 from my mandriva installation (where my program is working fine) and put the directory under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale, and added a line to locale.dirNow Gdk doesn't complain, but my characters are still garbled, so it didn't really change anything.Code: Select all
en_US.UTF-8/XLC_LOCALE: es_ES.UTF-8
What should I do?

Dear luca,
Please see whether this page would be of any use to you:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28124
Slackware locale files are here (utf-8 compatible)::
http://dotpups.de/diverse-tgz/glibc-i18 ... arch-4.tgz
If these are not helpful, may be you can either pm Nathan F or Mark Ulrich for help.
Best

Dear Friends
Wikipedia people have objected our page since they feel this as a sort of a manual and hence does not fit in an encyclopedia. I have asked them a few days time before they delete the page. I have created the same page now in Wikia: Hope we will not have trouble from now on at least:

I think you have to modify locale.alias file in /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/locale as well. If I am wrong, I apologize.luca wrote: However UTF-8 doesn't seem to be supported by Xlib:

Technical Wiki Pages
Irihapeti
I have created a link for the Technical Pages - on "SCIM" and "Applications with SCIM Compatibility" in the following Wiki. Please create a user account and put your tech writing on SCIM and other topics there. Just click on these red lettered topics - you will be taken to a Page showing the Wikia text editor, where you can input your text and save.

Thank you, but it didn't help. I previously used the locales from vector linux, I also tried the one you suggested, but it made no difference.RR Koothady wrote:Dear luca,

Scim-canna problem
As a result of a message on another thread, I've compiled scim-canna and packaged the canna server, for Japanese input.
The canna server is taken from Slackware repositories. Scim-canna I've compiled from source.
Now, the problem is this: I can get the whole thing to work on Puppy 2.17 and 3.01. That is, I can choose "Canna" from the scim menu and it will allow me to input characters. But in Puppy 4.00, I can't enter characters.
I can get the canna server to run. I can select the canna options from the scim menu. But when scim is activated with canna selected and I try to input, nothing happens. It's as though the keyboard were disconnected.
I even recompiled scim-canna on Puppy 4, with no difference being made. My guess is that there's a library or something missing in Puppy 4, but I have no idea which one or where to look.
Do any of the more experienced Puppians have any ideas?

Scim-canna problem solved

Many thanks for your suggestion. himajin has solved the problem by providing the missing libraries. These are now available along with the other scim .pet packages from http://www.puppylinux.ca/members/Irihapeti/

----------------------
The library file is gconv4dingo.pet, and it's only needed for running scim-canna on Puppy 4.00

Hi Irihapeti ,
You are welcome. By the way, I checked your pet package repository, are
they suitable for Puppy Linux 4.00? I am especially interested in
"scim-pinyin-0.5.91-i486.pet". I just uploaded 3 pet packages for Chinese
environment but this one is missing. This one is very popular input method
among non-native Chinese speakers. If yours works, I just let people know
where to download the package. I compiled one from source but it is very
big, about 4468K

Your site

is very useful.
We are now trying to translate Boot Process Messages into Japanese.
For example,
keyboard layout messages
X server selet messages
Saveing process messages
etc...
Japnase Puppy's site is here and you can douwnload ISOs, Themes and Wallpapers;

I have been away for a week and it seems Irihapeti has ironed out the problem I emailed tombh about? or did tombh?
No matter perhaps, it's looking good
I have had a sip phone message from Lobster to say that tombh or Hairy Will may need to make changes to the wiki structure to make it easier to use, though I hope Rameshji will continue to make his efforts elsewhere available on these community pages

Aitch:
I noticed this morning (NZST) that some things had been changed a bit on the wiki - mainly comments removed. I don't mind if they shift things around to make it easier for others.
I also had an email exchange with tombh. As far as I know, the problems are still there; I just figured out some workarounds, with the help of a good deal of frustration, some bad language, and lots of experimentation. I suppose I should also give some thanks to Bluefish editor as well - I was able to fool around with html code offline and get an idea as to what different things did.
Maybe I should do a wiki article about using the editor.
Ramesh has been offline for several days; rather busy with something else, I gather. I ported his material over from the other wiki. I hope we see him back online soon.
And I wonder about our friend Swarup. How is he getting on?
