How to install OpenOffice?

How do I install Open Office after having completed a full install? Anybody have a useful link? Thanks

I just did this myself about 12 hours ago Bandito and it was actually very easy to do from the .sfs file if that's what you were originally using and still have hanging around?

I opened my ROX-filer window, making sure I was able to see ALL files/directories by clicking upon the "Eye" icon on the iconbar. Once you do that, navigate to where your OpenOffice.org.sfs file is located and simply click upon it with your mouse. ROX will then mount the .sfs file which will allow you to go inside it and see all the directories and files. Really neat!

Next: I right-clicked on my "home button" on ROX which brings up a second ROX-Filer window. Now what I do is tile the two side-by-side. Then I match them directory-for-directory and copy the files across into my hard drive install of Puppy. Where I lack the directory (let's say I don't have an /opt) then I would copy the complete directory---files and all---into my Puppy.

When finished I do a triple-check just to make SURE I have everything! Then I open a terminal and type:

fixmenus

after which I usually reboot so that Puppy will "see" all the newly added files (just to be safe---call it a "Windows HoldOver"?).

Next, when I've freshly rebooted, I may use a terminal first and type:

Code: Select all

swriter

just to make sure I'm not missing any dependencies somewhere along the way. Call THAT one a holdover from installing from .tar and .deb files my friend.

If everything starts up fine then I'll use the new icons in the menus--if there are any there. Usually when copying from an .sfs file there will be.

Believe me Bandito!---I know this sounds complicated! But trust me when I say I had the entire procedure finished in less than a few minutes, 5 at the most, and that was nearly 100megs and the first time I'd ever done this type of file! I've got several more and when time and health permits I'm looking forward to trying this again!

or if you want a smaller version,
Open your puppy package manager and on the top it says Official Puppy 4.0, Official puppy3, Official puppy2
click 3 and scroll down to open office and click the cutdown version

Thanks guys. I have 2 PCs one is really old and basic so I'm going to try both methods, as I see the puppy installer provides a stripped down version.

What exactly would be the difference between the smaller version and the normal version of Open Office?

about 150MB compressed and way larger installed

Same program, minus help files, Locales etc, same functions. Also the cutdown version is a bit older, but doesn't make much of a difference. Nothing really noticeable.

I have also noticed that it is lightning fast to load (like everything else in Puppy) compared to Windoze. Can I be 100% sure that my docs created with the latest version will be readable? How often will Puppy's cutdown version be updated to the latest?

No It doesn't update, also if you want it to be truly compatible with say "MS Word" I would save the docs as .rtf. also I've found that if you save a doc as ".doc" the only problem I've ever seen is sometimes the inserted tables get problems with the alignments when opening in "MS Word" but not in other Openoffice's.

After using various versions of openoffice and Abiword, I'd have to say that ttuuxxx's advice is good. I have rarely, if ever, needed anything more than the OpenOffice-2.2 cutdown, but I did need the MS Office compatibility especially at work where they know no better. Thus far, OO seems to be slightly better than Abiword on MS Word compatibility, but that is debatable.
Thanks to Eyes-Only advice using .sfs on full-installs. That's what worked for me before.

Actually, the difference between the two, and the reason why the cut-down runs faster---as Ttuuxxx so kindly pointed out that it has locales, help files, plus other things cut out---the cut-down also has the java removed. This is why it springs to action so much faster on older machines, and in a blink of an eye on newer processors of 2gigs and over.

Myself? I don't know WHY they have java in OOo as I've never come across a document with it, but then again I'm not in the business world---I don't even have a printer---and I normally use Leafpad or Medit, and most times I can do programming in the former. -shrug-

Oh well, I had the .sfs file opened at the time and it seemed like a hard thing to pass up. LOL!

I do have the processor for it anyway so that's no worry, but I'd forgotten about the cut-down version. Kudos to Ttuuxxx for remembering that one!

I've tried to do what you said but I think I messed everything up

Instead of copying those folders in /home, I did it in / (where there was folders corresponding to those I found in the .sfs). It asked me several times if I wanted to overwrite certains files that were named identically and I accepted.

So my question is: after i'll have puppy reinstalled, should I create in / a folder for each of those that are in the .sfs? I mean for example there is a folder called ".etc" in / should I create a folder for "etc" that is in ths .sfs or its content should go in the ".etc" that already is in / ?

Oh I forgot : I'm running a pentium III 1GHz, 64 RAM !

The cut-down version is a pet package, here's the link http://www.puppylinux.ca/puppyfiles/pet ... -2.2.0.pet

if you wanted to use the sfs first click file on your desktop then rox will open in root, press the green arrow thats point up, that will take you above root and you should see a bunch of folders, including the root folder, now drag your open office sfs there, click on it, extract the contents into that directory.
and thats it

or your could drag those files into any folder you make say the folders name is "openoffice" then type in a terminal, dir2pet openoffice
that will make a pet package of that folder, I'm sure it will be a big one

then click to install it

PS I missed the parted that you have 64MB of ram, Please just use the pet package, You'll be happier with it

you download it and left click on it, The puppy package manager will install it for you.

ok I did this and here is what it said: screen shot (sorry I couldn't understand how to use that paint so the sreen shot shows the whole screen).

edit:after giving it a try, if I click on an .odt file it says "no run action specified for files of this type..."

Thats just fine, its missing gnome and kde files, which puppy doesn't support by default.
Reset JWM , menu/shutdown/Restart JWM and you should see new menu items in document etc , click one of the office parts and it should start.

if not tell me whats wrong.

yeah I did give it a try, everything seems to work, but if I save a file, close it, and try to open it, it says what I said in my pre-previous message: no run action sepcified blablabla

Hi, I am running a full install of Puppy Dingo and have installed the open office pet. Everything works great except I can't get the spell check to work. It tells me that it has finished checking the document, but does not catch any errors. What do I need to do to get this working? Thanks!
