Suggestions for Forum Improvement

The first time I signed on here, the URL shown looked like an IP address, which I never was able to find afterwards.
It might be helpful to future newbies if you put the "murga-linux.com" on the header with, or instead of, the home page URL.
Or send a bag of bread crumbs with the welcome message:-)

Worms spread via spam on Facebook and MySpace.
Expect to see this kind of stuff here too, methinks.

How about enabling review of posts by days/hours gone by?
I like to look over the headings of all the new posts since my last logon. But I've found several problems with this:
1. I often touch <insert> accidentally, cutting off the connection, and instantly removing my ability to view the list of new posts
2. I often log on with a different version, and/or from a different machine, using a different 2sf file, in which case I don't get a correct list to begin with
3. I often get diverted from the original list and don't find my way back
All this is pretty maddening, especially if I've glimpsed a post or thread I want to read, but can't find it again with the search engine (I couldn't even find this thread with it).
The simple solution is to have the ability to review all of the new posts of the past X hours, or past X days.
Is that feasible with the available software?

Most people are mostly talking about removing spam as the improvement for this forum and radically changing the forum...So my suggestion's a bit different. A lot of us puppians seem to be getting interested in compiling and there are quite a fair bit of posts concerning compiling- Could we possibly set up a sub-forum in "Users ( For the regulars )" for compiling?
Just my cents worth...Thanks for listening...

messages
I have suggestion cum query for forum improvement, which would also reduce the server load
Is it possible to be able to download my messages from my inbox & savebox, etc, currently back up to close to 100% again, without having to open/copy each one, one at a time,...... which takes ages!
Thanks

I don't think feces generally evaporate. They often get broken down by flies - though it's unusual for a fly to eat its own crap.
From what I saw it's disappearance was in the interest of "forum improvement". Maybe Otropogo would like to start the thread again if he's genuinely concerned about the subject. Maybe, this time he can do it without the need to quote / misquote others to explain his concerns and can use his own words to positively enforce his views towards some of the techniques which may help in the improvement of puppy.
AJ, you're a bright, humours chap with a verbal elegance - how about a thread with a review of Arch with information on what mods you've done, how easy it was, what works and doesn't, how it performs straight from the horses mouth as such - rather than just dangling a maggot under our noses.
Cheers, Adam.

Censorship is censorship regardless of the guise or cloak. If unconvinced, ask Gn2, Mark South and klhrevolutionist. From what I saw it's disappearance was in the interest of "forum improvement".
Thanks, but please excuse me for being suspicious. Whenever I'm getting stroked in front, something not so pleasant is about to occur in back.AJ, you're a bright, humours chap with a verbal elegance...
That's not going to happen for the same reason Robert Heinlein wisely advised: "Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig."...how about a thread with a review of Arch with information on what mods you've done, how easy it was, what works and doesn't, how it performs straight from the horses mouth as such...
I knew it! There's the dagger!...rather than just dangling a maggot under our noses.

I locked it because it became apparent that nothing productive was going to happen there. Flash then decided it was worth removing. I don't think it was that bad, but I'm not going to argue about it. I have better things to do.

@Pizzasgood
Though I don't believe a lock was necessary, I applaud your restraint.
@Flash
Up to your old tricks, eh? Shame on you!

Well, the mystery of how is solved. There remains the mystery of why?
I wasn't consulted prior to the removal of the entire thread. I wonder who was?
I would certainly have been receptive to a proposal to remove my quote of Bruce from the original post, and all other references to it and the ensuing discussion of "slander", if the other parties to this side issue agreed to do the same. But I was never asked.
And so the puppy was thrown out with the wastewater..
I'm persuaded that this was meant to be a demonstration of raw, dictatorial power.
Meanwhile, I see that Pigshed is working his potty mouth again, apparently secure in the support of the moderators.

The key word is removed, not deleted. I can still go bring back the on-topic portions.
I'd have done it earlier but I had some things I needed to take care of first.

There, all cleaned up and ready to go.
This time around, lets all be more tolerant of each other, okay? We're not here to play king of the hill. If somebody does something that you perceive as an insult, just be an adult and let it slide. And just so I'm clear, that's directed at everybody.

I don't remember where the thread was originally posted, so I stuck it in Suggestions. Seems like a proper fit. If you had an important reason for putting it wherever you put it before, and that wasn't Suggestions, let me know and I can move it back.

"Cleaned up?" It's more like butchered.Pizzasgood wrote:There, all cleaned up and ready to go.
Two of my posts evaporated: one in response to WhoDo and another to someone after that. I request that my posts be put back into the thread.
This butcher job is a classic example of control-freakitis and heavy handed censorship. Think about the message you're sending:
"If we don't like what you write or how you write it, we'll edit it to our liking (without your permission) and stick your signature back on it (without your permission)."
A better approach would have been to make your point as a moderator, hint at a lock if things don't change, and then if things didn't change, lock the thread -- but leave the posts as an example of behavior to avoid.
Instead you've foolishly (IMHO) chosen to completely disembowel the thread and leave more questions than answers.

(emphasis mine)we'll edit it to our liking (without your permission) and stick your signature back on it (without your permission).
I think that's a pretty good point, and one reason I generally avoid touching other people's posts. That and the "what makes me qualified to judge" argument.
Under normal circumstances I wouldn't do this sort of thing. But I want to give that thread another shot at life.
If it had been smaller, I'd have just started a new thread and quoted the relevant parts. It would feel less dirty.
If you'd prefer that your remaining posts not even appear in the thread, that can be arranged. But I can't put posts that have been taken out back in. The forum just doesn't work that way*.
That goes for everyone else too.
In the future, I'll wait for a general consensus before doing something like this. If I do it at all.
*Since this is the "Suggestions for Forum Improvement" thread, I suggest a mod that lets us 'merge' thread in addition to splitting them. That way when, for example, people post in both versions of a duplicate thread they can be combined into one. Also, if somebody accidentally splits an extra post out of a thread it could be put back in.

Here's a complaint. This whole issue leading to the removal of the thread was supposedly about my "misquoting" someone, by reprinting his exact words without the context.
Yet here, in the "sanitized" version of the resurrected thread, what do I find?

So, now go back a page, and see the actual context from which my quote was taken and so grossly misrepresented:

I know that, despite the lack of attribution, the second quote is mine, and so does everyone else. Yet I know damn well that my sentence was not made in the context provided.disciple wrote: We do have a legitimate problem with bug reports potentially never being dealt with.

So misquoting people, even deliberately falsifying the context, is evidently NOT the issue here. Only select individuals are held to any standard of behaviour in this forum.disciple wrote:
Is it an example of this? Did people report it in the past and ignore it, or is the problem really that no one else had reported it because, as you say, it isn't generally used?
What difference does it make? Especially since we have no way of ever finding out...
What a farce!

I've been trying very hard to give you the benefit of the doubt this whole time. But now you've finally managed to convince me that you were intentionally trying to destroy that thread. Well, if that's the way you want it, fine. It can stay dead.
