Problem with installing OpenOffice
First of all I want to thank teh developer(s) of puppy linux, I'm really happy that I found an operating system which runs on my old Toshiba Satellite laptop (366 mhz 128 mb ram). I tested DSL Xubuntu etc. but they all didn't work.
The new version (No. 4) is nearly perfect, but I need OpenOffice instead of AbiWord because it's more comfortable to use. Does anybody know a good instruction/tutorial how to install OpenOffice on my machine? I read some which did'nt really work or were too difficult for a Linux newbie.
And sorry for my bad English, in the German board nobody could help me

OpenOffice in Puppy 4
First of all, as a teacher of English I can tell you your English is excellent, much better than my German.
As a non-technical user of Puppy, I'll recount for you how I got OpenOffice:
I downloaded the .sfs file at "ftp://ks301128.kimsufi.com/Muppy0084/Al ... ice3beta2/"
Put the file in your home folder, reboot, and go to the System menu, then "Boot Manager Configure Bootup." You should see the sfs file on the left. Add it to the right column. Uncheck the box that says "ignore this list. . ." Open the console and type in fixmenu. Enter. Reboot.
I hope if this attempt is full of errors someone will correct them.

Finding the Programs
"But where do I find openoffice, which folder? Or how do I create a shortcut to this program?"
I found the program in /etc, in an openoffice folder. All the executables are there: soffice and so forth. Click on soffice or swriter to get an empty text.
How you get them to your desktop depends on what windows manager you have. If it's jwm you just drag it to the desktop; then you can access a suitable icon by right clicking, choose change icon, and drag your icon to the box provided. I'm using icewm with wbar, so it's different in my case. Good luck.

In this folder aren't these icons and the console does'nt know this command. And in /etc aren't new files.trapster wrote:Check in /usr/local/bin (I think)
soffice
swriter
scalc
sthis
sthat
in a console, you can try
which swriter
when you find it, drag it to the desktop.
Did I use the wrong openoffice-version? My version is called openoffice-2.2.0.sfs

First of all, please specify if you have a full or a frugal installation.
Then we can talk better.

If you were using a frugal install of pup4, then if you placed the openoffice-2.2.0.sfs file in /mnt/home directory, and renamed it to /mnt/home/openoffice_400.sfs, then when you reboot, puppy should detect it & mount it.
Otherwise, if you're using a full install, you have two options. Either mount the file, and copy everything across to /, or write a script to mount the .sfs file, open whatever program you want to run, then unmount the .sfs when you've finished.
With pup4 you should be able to mount the file by just clicking on it.

OK I assume the OOo sfs is downloaded to your full install already.
(ps the file you mention is a plugin for gnumeric to import from OOo, has nothing to do with OOo itself)
There are manuals out there but they have to be read.
See this.
The procedure altho for devx is good for OOo also.

I have finally installed openoffice after a long procedure. Thanks for all your advices , but I have chosen a different way.
I clicked the .sfs file and puppy told me this file is mounted. A folder opened and then I copied all files to a local hard drive folder. Then I made some shortcuts to the desktop and now I have a perfect little comfortable machine for university. Thanks a lot!

Good to hear you managed to get it working. If you wanted to add, say swriter, to the menu, if you opened the file /usr/share/applications/Leafpad-text-editor.desktop in a text editor, you would have:
If you then altered this to:
then saved this as /usr/share/applications/swriter.desktop, then entered the console command fixmenus, then when you next restart the window manager, it should be in your menu.
N.B. For the lines Icon= & Exec, you might have to provide a full path to the relevant icon, and the executable.
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Leafpad text editor
Icon=leafpad.xpm
Comment=Leafpad text editor
Exec=leafpad
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=TextEditor
GenericName=Leafpad text editor

And complementary to find the full path search for soffice with pfind.
You might create also desktop files for scalc, simpress etc...
