Where can I get hold of Inkscape 0.46 for Puppy 4.x?[SOLVED]
Where can I get hold of Inkscape 0.46 for Puppy 4.x?[SOLVED]
Greetings!
I'm currently running Puppy 4.1.0, and I'm looking for a particular file:
inkscape_0.46-i386.tar.gz
I've looked at a few threads in this forum. I found a couple of links. This link:
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/pr ... 6-i386.pet
currently says: Concurrent download limit exceeded.
Shame. This is the one that kind of works.
There is another that is still available from Jason Salis' personal website:
http://salis.sutteryuba.com/cms.php?act ... or_Drawing
Both files fail to install. Each one throws an archived file into this folder: /root/.packages
However, the file from salis.sutteryuba.com is empty when I try to de-compress it, while the file from www.puppylinux.ca actually de-compresses properly and a .pet file appears. This file installs to the system without a hitch.
I will use Inkscape 0.45 in the mean time. But if someone could point me to a function version of 0.46 for Puppy, I'd appreciate it.

Well, thanks for the tip. Did you use any particular software to decompress a .pet file? Y'know, in order to view its contents?Aitch wrote:I got the one from Jason's site & it decompressed OK size is 56Mb or thereabouts, no MD5 hash though
I get Inkscape & etc folder & user folder both with other content
etc has bash, user has 7 other folders
Maybe try downloading again, & ensure it has finished before trying to decompress it
Aitch
EDIT: OK. I've got the file opened. I'll do my best to try to scatter the files on my file system and see if I can get this thang working.

Aitch, could you please post the link to Jason's file?
regards,
Alvaro
ps. NM, I already saw the link above
EDITED: Indeed, what Bob reports is right. The pet package manager reports an error when trying to install the .pet:
I also tried downloading the file several times. You mean it should be decompressed instead of installed? And what's wrong with this package?

Just found another version by ttuuxxx here:
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/pr ... 6-i386.pet
but as usual, servers are completely flooded and unavailable

Ah ha! I was about to post this very thing when FireFox up and crashed on me (without any warning).afecelis wrote:Aitch, could you please post the link to Jason's file?

Now: I get the same message with the file I download from www.puppylinux.ca. However, when I drill my way to /root/.packages there's a .pet file there. When I click it Inkscape 0.46 installs perfectly. The one from salis.sutteryuba.com gives me a .tar.gz file that XArchive 0.2.8-6 says contains no files for a 55 mb item.
Say, afecelis: I believe the file from puppylinux.ca will be available on the 1st of the month. I got the same problem: not able to download because the server has hit its limits.afecelis wrote:Just found another version by ttuuxxx here:

I had a copy... but I wiped my memory stick to re-install and I was sure and certain I had the better version saved on my Ubuntu desktop. I realize ... I was wrong. :'-(
OK.
Things are getting clearer. I just went to the PETget package manager and installed both versions of Inkscape 0.45. I figure these two packages MUST have enough dependencies bundled into them to possibly help with the installation of 0.46.
I'm not done yet. I need to resize my personal file a bit in order to give the file some room to expand. I'll be back... with the results.

OK.
inkscape_0.46-i386 is installed!
The setup process is a bit convoluted. If you're a Puppy Linux "beginner", these instructions may seem like too difficult to bother with. Sorry about that. But this is what I did:
First step: Get the file from Salis Sutteryuba. Now, I did this in Ubuntu Linux.
Second step: While in Ubuntu, I double clicked the .pet file and extracted its contents to the desktop.
Third step: Booted up Puppy Linux and clicked the "file" icon on the desktop (the home icon). This opens the Rox file manager to the "~" home folder. I clicked the "eye" icon in the toolbar. This reveals hidden folders and files. I opened the .packages folder and copied the inkscape_0.46-i386 folder from my Ubuntu desktop into ~/.packages.
Fourth step: I browsed the contents of my USB stick and clicked the inkscape_0.46-i386.pet file. The installation just went along smoothly at this point.
the error, as I understand it
The .pet file doesn't seem to create the ~/.packages/inkscape_0.46-i386 folder properly. It may be that all the files contained within the .pet file simply do not end up there in correct order. This is the complain in the red dialogue box:
"...or has not expanded into its own directory with the name of inkscape_0.46-i386/ (which is how most packages expand)."
So my guess was... the package wasn't expanding correctly. So it required the help of some unarchiver that could extract the contents of a .pet file. Here "Ewwbuntu" come through.
So, it's possible to get Inkscape 0.46 going using the inferior file. You'll need a different unarchiver than what comes with my version of Puppy Linux though (i.e., XArchive 0.2.8-6).

@Bob: I tried everything as you suggested, and things "behaved" as you described. With the uncompressed folder, the pet installer is able to run fine; however, when I tried to run Inkscape the system "hung" and started acting weird, so I rebooted, and when entering the dektop, all of my shortcuts and default elements were gone!!
I decided to replace mysave sfs file for the latest backup I had available on my drive, now things are back to normal, with Inkscape 0.45
@ttuuxxx: thanks for the new link. Will try it out and see if my puppy doesn't start screaming in pain with it, lol .
regards,
Alvaro

Yikes! Well, it was not intentional. I guess if I wanted to nuke your system, I'd devise a better way, mm? Something far more effective.afecelis wrote:@Bob: I tried everything as you suggested, and things "behaved" as you described. Note: I was using a Puplet called "MiPup" at the time. I'm currently testing MU's Muppy 008.3f (and I'm torrenting 008.4c) and my "method" failed in Muppy. It reports that my personal .sf2 file is too small, i.e., not enough room. My .sf2 file is set to 512 Mb and only about 25 Mb is currently in use.
MiPup is based on Puppy 4.1.0 whereas I believe MUppy is based on 3.x. This may account for some of the varying behavior between your version and the two I've been using.
I've downloaded the newest copy of Inkscape 0.46.pet file. I'm going to test it in Muppy 008.3f and later in Muppy 008.4c. I'll post the result in this post when I'm done.Dingo wrote:if you can confirm that this version works fine,I will replace version linked here:

Edit #1: installation warnings:
However, these dependencies are missing:
File /usr/bin/inkscape has these missing library files:
- libpoppler.so.2 libpoppler-glib.so.2
File /usr/bin/inkview has these missing library files:
- libpoppler.so.2 libpoppler-glib.so.2
File /usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 has these missing library files:
- libpixman-1.so.0
The PETget package manager does not know what package has these libraries.
Edit #2: functionality issues:
Well, I too lost all my desktop icons. Every attempt to return to X brought more havoc. A reboot resulted in Muppy working OK with my personal file, but the Inkscape menu entry is gone.
Again: I'm fairly certain that Muppy 008.3f is based, as its number indicates, on version 3x of Puppy Linux. I shall now return to Ubuntu and torrent Muppy 008.4c and try Inkscape again.
