Xorg wizard in Puppy 301: bug, suggestion and question

#1 Post by 3wsparky »

the orgwizard option's menu ,
two things really

First off what i see as a bug: when the xorg wizard starts it asks you to select which environment you would like to use, however after 2 - 3 seconds the two options are covered over by text showing "dhcpd started" so you don't know what you're selecting. basically i think there needs to be a couple of carriage returns before this command is run to allow it to display the text but below the menu options.

anyone else agree / have a solution ?

secondly is there a way to cut down on the options in the xorg wizard to remove everything thats not 1024x768 24 all devices i use are capable of this and it would be better to have fewer options.

having more options isnt a bug its a

preference issue (I know it bugs you thats different )

this is a bug/glitch
options are covered over by text showing "dhcpd started" so you don't know what you're selecting.
which may be from the boot up not finished displaying to the console?
I'll have to check that

before 3.01 there were just a few options in the xvesa selection
I hacked the puppy 2.16 xvesa script and added 16 more options

here's a sample of what can be done to make your own
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 97&t=25563

if you click on the middle one that says xvesa advanced.png
you can just see a screen shot of what it looks like

so if you piece together and old computer you can at least get the monitor
working

I always use xvesa its faster uses less memory and using x16
make a big speed difference

I already made a script for xvesa which I could easily modify
with exactly what you asked for

I'll take a look at xorg and see what I can do

but I should say most people want more options or an auto config

x options

Agreed , users always want more options ,

I think there is a split though between automation and options , some people want lots of options , other an automatted process that will present them with a x enviroment that is at a good resolution.

thats kind of what i'm trying to get is automatted setting of the correct resolution.

# the echo commands on /etc/eth0mode

could you write the line #you changed ?

check the last few lines of /tmp/bootkernel.log

and see if the eth0 info is still getting logged or not

if its only the echo to console and not redirected elsewhere

then that would work
