New Puppy Linux forum
New Puppy Linux forum
I have set up an additional Puppy Linux forum, http://www.toddrichardson.com/forum/.
I would like to use the same moderators, if they are willing. It would also be nice if users kept their same names.

Thanks Todd I've been there and registered. Since this forum is terribly unstable and slow sometimes I feel we desperately needed a backup. Now we just need to get the word out to new users that they have an alternative if this forum doesn't work and make sure regulars also check out the new forum from time to time. I will. I would also like to remind the regulars that a few people are posting on http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/puppy-71/ so everyone please go there and check from time to time.

If this forum is all that unstable, why not look for another permanent home? Why not field test Todd's site, and if it looks good, archive this site, and if possible, copy content, otherwise just mark the old site (this one), read only, provide a pointer to the new site, and similarly, on the new site, link back to the old site.Artie wrote:Thanks Todd I've been there and registered. Also bears questioning: What is wrong with the Linux Questions site? Could it become the main site? Whatever is done, put the stake in deeply in the ground, support whatever choice is made and try ti stick to it. To me, it does not matter what becomes the main site, but there really should be one, it should be solid, reliable, and it should be found from any other previous sites. What has been the problem anyway?

The problem is that this forum is very unstable. It can work fine for long periods at a time, then suddenly you click on a page and it times out, or sometimes you post and it times out, or posts disappear or you double post because you don't know if your previous posting caught and you try again. It's been intermittently like this for a long time but lately it's become worse. I'm not too technical a person and I'm sure John Murga does his best, but it seems to me we need a better technical solution? Would it be possible to use mirrors, to have the same content on several synchronized servers in case one develops a problem with bandwidth or whatever the other one takes the load? Might another single permanent home also develop the same problems?

Very good question. The main problem with mirroring the forum is that it requires a central database.Would it be possible to use mirrors, to have the same content on several synchronized servers in case one develops a problem with bandwidth or whatever the other one takes the load? Thanks Todd,
Good step. How much load would your hosting survive? For using it as a mirror forum,
- We can use a central database and give access to the host 2 as a remote host authorized to access the MySQL database on the host 1. Or,
- Have a sync mechanism between the hosts to keep the databases in sync. This can run few times a day.
It would definitely help the community to have an alternate forum/mirror.

I have said it before:
It's my experience, that NNTP based forums are more stable and present the threads in a much clearer way then php based forums.
But I know there is little interest in going that way.
EDIT:
Registered anyway.

You will have to contact John MurgaIt would definitely help the community to have an alternate forum/mirror.
If this forum is down (which can be tested for)
then users can be redirected to Todds forum.
How to best do this is something you will have work towards
but it is worth pursuing persistently. See what John thinks
Just read that John is moving to a new x2 faster forum host soon.
We have over 15 000 registered forum users - add to that bots and unregistered users. Quite a load.
A forum has to be maintained and that is where the real service that John provides should be recognised.
Setting up a forum is simple in comparison.
Thanks guys

Actually, he said that he's going to do it "in a couple of months."Lobster wrote:Just read that John is moving to a new x2 faster forum host soon.
