here I am , boys....
I tested my laptop only , and here is what I saw...

almost all is perfect, but winelite didn't work

gimp works, but with a warning of a missing file at opening...

the maximum admitted numbers of SFS is 20 in my laptop ( I don't know if my xwesa -videocard - compatibily has something to do with it ).

all the rest of SFS worked magnifically, I ever opened the unknown ( to me ) samba and virtualbox

in brief , I love it.

I only wish to say that I couldn't download the OPEN OFFICE SFS ( " file not found ") , please tell me where I can find it ( one of my all-favourites )

and please : how could I set the default opening programs in choicepup ? it seems the last downloading prevails in opening the files

I'll make my flash drive bootable choisepup and hopefully tomorrow I'll send you the results on my desktop pC

many many thanks, buddies

hugs

jrb and/or whoever is in charge of uploading ChoicePup and the ch-.sfs files:
Is it possible to place all of the ch-.sfs files in one (ziped) package for those who would like to download them all?

Perhaps there is a method to download them in one shot? I already got them but I thought it might be a practical download option.

Good job and thank you for Choice!

iBoot,
Glad you like it. :)
Is it possible to place all of the ch-.sfs files in one (ziped) package for those who would like to download them all?
It would be possible, but also a very large download, not to mention taking up server space. If you open a console and type (or copy this and paste with middle button):

Code: Select all

wget -crP /mnt/home http://puppylinux.asia/members/choicepup/sfs/ --user=puppy --password=linux
It will download the entire /choicepup/sfs directory to your /mnt/home/ all in one go (look for /mnt/home/pupplinux.asia).

rheya,
Thanks for checking the packages.
almost all is perfect, but winelite didn't work
Wine is complicated, it deals with windows, right? It doesn't work with all windows programs either. If you have XP on your computer open the /WINDOWS folder and click on winmine.exe. Minesweeper should open and you can play it (best program microsoft ever made IMHO).

If you install windows programs (successfully) they will be installed to /root/.wine. You can then run them by clicking on the executable (.exe) or typing the appropriate command in a console. You can make menu entries as well http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34964. I have turned my /root/.wine into an .sfs package and it runs well but it has commercial software in it and I can't distribute it. :( Maybe my next HowTo will be on making a .wine.sfs.
I ever opened the unknown ( to me ) samba and virtualbox
Samba allows other machines on your home network to copy files to and from the harddrive of the computer running samba (also to modify and delete files on that machine! ). If you are running samba and open Pnethood from the Network menu, you will see "PUPPYSERVER". You can enter the user and password, click connect and you will be seeing the filesystem of your samba machine. Click on server_home and you will see /mnt/home on the samba machine.

I'll let somebody else explain virtualbox. Try going to http://www.wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html and doing a search.
how could I set the default opening programs in choicepup ?
As for default opening, you've just found another of my errors. I forgot to set the default .doc opener back to defaultwordprocessor from mswordview!Doh! The default settings are in /root/Choices/MIME-types/. Files there set the default opener for each type of file. Howver, almost all the .sfs packages place an entry on the right-click OpenWith menu so you can right click on a file and choose which program you want to open it.

Thanks again, J

choicepup-4.1.2retro-k2.6.21.7-v2.iso is uploaded.

A frugal install of this one needs max_loop=28 added to the kernel line in menu.1st. i.e.

Code: Select all

kernel /puppy412R/vmlinuz max_loop=28 pmedia=atahd psubdir=puppy412R nosmp acpi=force

BUT HELP ME , PLEASE
I tried to make a uSB bootalbe choisepup and I couldn't....
I already make a boot USB with puppy412 without any problem , but with choicepup I can't....
where do I make mistakes ?
where can I find a detalled user guide for it?
I read "puppy book " and I follewed it at word....
I used the puppy universal installer and gparted for making a bootable usb with FAT32...

The latest Thunderbird email client, ch-thunderbird-2.0.0.21.sfs has been uploaded. It seems to work well.

I strongly recommend setting it up, closing it, then moving /root/.thunderbird to /mnt/home and then symlinking back to /root. This way it won't fill up your pup_save and you won't lose your email if your pup_save crashes.

Let me know how it works for you.

really ? this recommendation of you JRB makes me think of the " mysterious " .opera file I saw in my /mnt/home after " tasting " opera SFS in choisepup ..
but , of course, in opera case it moved to my mnt/home alone
it' s a good idea to have sort of security copy of e-mails..
anyway, I'll try thunderbird, another must for me

any help for my USB boot with choisepup ?

Hi rheya,
OK, I did it. Made a bootable usb that is. :D

You're right, I was unsuccessful with ChoicePup, I've no idea why it would'nt work. :( So what I did was make a bootable usb with Puppy412. Once I was sure it would boot I deleted initrd.gz and pup_412.sfs from it and then copied initrd.gz and pup_412choicex70U.sfs from ChoicePup over to it. Rebooted and I was looking at ChoicePup. 8)

I hope that works for you, J

About /mnt/home/.opera, I had hoped that .mozilla and .googleearth could be put on /mnt/home automatically but it didn't work. You can still move them there yourself, when firefox and googleearth are shut down, and then symlink back to /root. They both take up quite a bit of room which could fill up your pup_save.

wine updated with wine tools, portable apps autorun (if installed in /mnt/home) and lots of menu items... esound, jack and ldap included
http://puppylinux.asia/members/T/apps_s ... 86_420.sfs
puppy:linux for login:password
(don't forget to rename to ...412.sfs - it was compiled on 4.1.2 & tested)

works great with portable apps and

for .opera .... add these to your /etc/operaprefs_default.ini
sets to download to /mnt/home/ ... web desktop as homepage ... .opera to /mnt/home/ (not verified) ... set memory cache to auto ... turns off disk cache.... note that you can copy any of the settings from your ~/.opera/operaprefs.ini and if you change them in /etc/operaprefs_fixed.ini they are supposed to not be modified by the menu

WHAT IS pup_412choisex70U sfs ?
well,I know , it's a choisepup master file, but yesterday a " pup_412choisex70T sfs " appeared !
T instead of U ....
maybe it has something to do with the fact that yesterday night I entered a puppy412 live CD in my laptop instead of the choisepup live CD
anyway, I couldn't make any bootable USB anymore from now on, nor the classical puppy 412 so easy before
Now I erased the T file from my hard disk ( sorry, from my /mnt/home :D ) and choisepup is working fine...
I decided to run choisepup live CD only, and I'd have loved to have a usb bootable too with it...., but it's obviously not working for me...
anyway, the live CD perfectly does... :D
any new SFS available to " test "?

I have limited bandwidth so it would take me forever to download all the sfs files and do this on my own. If someone has all of the sfs files and could tar.gz the *.desktop files (and preferably corresponding icons) for me it would be a great help. I plan to make corresponding pet package(s) for each sfs so that it will show up in your menu even if its not loaded. When you click on the menu entry it will load the sfs if it is not loaded and then run the program... if its already loaded then it will just run the program.... all from the black magic of "PATH"

I'd just make a script with the same name as the executable that runs loadsfs some.sfs and then someexecutable. Putting it last in the PATH hierachy will make it only run if the sfs is not already loaded. Having the desktop entry of the same name prevents duplicate menu entries. Having the same icon in the pet package just provides continuity. (I will assume sfs files are in /mnt/home unless there are better suggestions) Let me know if I am missing something.

rheya,
WHAT IS pup_412choisex70U sfs ?
pup_412choicex70U.sfs is the 20th version of choicepup main file. I started at A and have worked up to U. The T version I pulled off the server after 36 hours. It didn't run firefox, my mistake in not checking thoroughly enough. If you have the latest choicepup-4.1.2-k2.6.25.16-v2.iso you can click on the cd drive icon on the desktop and you should see pup_412choicex70U.sfs among the files there. Good job erasing that earlier version. Your computer could get confused.

No new .sfs today. See How to get FF to open a URL clicked on in TBird about a fix for that latest Thunderbird email .sfs.
then symlink back to /root.
Open /root by clicking on file icon on desktop. Open /mnt/home by clicking on drive icon with yellow dot. Drag .thunderbird to the /mnt/home window and then choose "Move". Now drag it back to /root and choose "Link (absolute)". .thunderbird with a little arrow should appear in /root. Thats it, its been symlinked.

Hi technosaurus,
Thanks for the link to http://puppylinux.asia/members/T/apps_s ... 86_420.sfs I'll check it out.
When you click on the menu entry it will load the sfs if it is not loaded and then run the program
Wow! I had thought of this as a possibility but hadn't even begun to consider how to do it. That would be awesome! :D I'll put together the .desktop files tonight and post the link. Have to work this afternoon instead of playing with puppy.

Cheers, J
