open source cell phones

#1 Post by brymway »

I've been looking around for a phone and company that supports open source. OpenMoko is about the only one that is totally open but the news about the development is unclear and not very encouraging. The Android phone is supposedly open but it's owned by google. (?) As far as I know google is right there with microsoft as far as open source goes. Does anyone know of any other solid cell phones that are the iphone competition?

The Palm Pre with Palm webOS is "closed source (with open source components)" according to Wikipedia. From what I understand, it is Linux with WebKit as the GUI; similar to the Android concept. Not that I have anything against Google, or Microsoft, but I really hope Palm webOS succeedes. I don't know if it is because they are the "little guy", but they seem more open source friendly.
