Memory mysteries

#1 Post by Old Codger »

On machines with 1Gb of ram, 1.5Gb is shown as available.

On the machine with 2Gb available memory is shown as 958Mb.

Is this a "feature"?

I have an idea, please tell me what version of Puppy AND where (how) you are getting these readings.

Puppy 4.2.

The glyph at the bottom right of the panel (and the puppy space on the widget sidebar).

Also a 384Mb machine reports 1.2Gb of available space! (actually 1.2gB whatever that means).

The 1.2 obviously doesn't reflect the RAM, but I think it
does reflect the available space in your pup_save file if Frugal
install or the partition if Full Install.

If not post back with . . . ? ! @ # $

PS GB would mean Gigabytes as in 1000 (1024) Megabytes

I don't know about frugal installs because I either do full installs or run the live cd and save to a usb stick.

On a full install, Puppy shows the space left in the partition.

Using live cd and saving to usb stick, Puppy shows the space left in the pup save file.

Running the live cd with no save file, Puppy shows free ram plus swap, if any. I think......that's the way it works for me anyway.

James C, I think you did a good job of nailing the behavior.

Thank you guys.

So your saying that although I'm currently running Puppy from a live CD, it will use an existing swap partition on the hdd?

[PS My point was that I know what a Gb or GB is but not a gB!]

To answer your question, yes. In my experience, when running Puppy from the live cd Puppy uses the existing swap partition.

For example, I'm posting from a computer with 384 mb ram and 1gb swap, running the live cd, And Puppy is showing 701mb free at the moment.
