Thom,

gposil - many thanks!

I won't download and test it just yet - but can you tell me if it is compatible with this video-scoring (research) application called "CowLog" http://www.mm.helsinki.fi/~mpastell/CowLog/CowLog.html?

I would love to see such an application running in Puppy, and to a noob like myself your pet will help pave the way,

Cheers!

Thanks Mark for posting those libs so quickly....two other points to be aware of, you need to ldd /usr/bin/kmdr-executor as well to make all depends are satisfied, and I forgot one thing in my pet, you need to put a symlink in Startup, pointing to /usr/bin/kdeinit.

If you dont want to restart, just run kdeinit from console and you are right.

I'll redo the pet with MU's libs and the symlink and upload it...

gposil -

9:30 PM here at Swamp (Toowoomba) and I see that your overnight temperature at Dalveen will probably plunge below freezing tonight.
Well - you're my hero in zero (degrees Celsius)! :D Thankyou so much for the CowLog pet you compiled - way beyond the call and again many, many thanks. I had thought of having a swing at converting the deb myself, but the relevant forum made me suspect it might be dicey - absolutely marvelous.

Coincidentally, I intend to use the video program to research cattle behaviour at UQ Gatton - I only came across CowLog 2 nights ago after realizing that my other main alternative - JWatcher Video (http://www.jwatcher.ucla.edu/) was going to mean problems, in Wine. For that, the latest relevant Puppy pets (e.g., java virtual machine, jre 6-u13 (or maybe I downloaded the tarball from Sun), Qtime72 in technosaurus' winetricks bundle) all surpass the minimum requirements, and installed without hassle whatsoever - but I still got Fatal Errors with JWatcher startups as I couldn't work out the java classpath issues (I suspect - I had similar troubles in XP trying to use JWatcher with Quicktime-Alternative instead of the commercial version, to no avail). CowLog might well save me a world of pain in video (avi to mov) conversions. I'll work with your pets overnight on something a little better than my usual Socket 7's, and give you proper feedback.

Muchly, muchly appreciated :D

Hello guys,
As the developer of CowLog I'm really glad to see this interest :) I have actually thought about trying to run it with Puppy, but haven't found the time.

I would like to add gposil's CowLog pet to the CowLog website, is this OK for you?

Also Puppyt, let me know if you get it running and if you have any other feedback. So far the only feedback that I get comes from our group and I do the installations myself.

Best,
Matti

That would be great Matti, and i'm sure Puppyt will appreciate any help you can give him.

Anyone else who is interested in Cowlog, remember that apart from Kommander, you will also need MPlayer, which is available in the Puppy Repositories.

 I'm a goose, gposil.

Several "nooby-goofs" have occurred since my last email, in my haste to have your pets up-and-running. First mistake was to forget, in my excitement, that Kommander=KDE windows environment  (I knew that - I just didn't listen to the voice in the back of my head). As soon as I realised that it wasn't going to run in the Turbopup base I was working on, I sought to find the compatible KDE sfs' (found helpful instructions on compiling my own from the slackware site - puppylinux URL to follow) and silly-putty the dependencies in (and thanks too to MU for his help on the matter, re missing libraries earlier in this thread).

Thinking that was going to take too long, I ran a parallel computer with KDE puplets pre-loaded (e.g., TEENpup2009, Lighthouse412rc2+ Mariner.SFS) and run your pets on those. Fail, fail, fail. Was working my way to Muppy8.4d or Newyearspup02rc10 before I realised that my Kommander pet was corrupted from an incomplete download from the very outset. So rather than feel like a goose that I couldn't follow your instructions and see things working, I feel like a goose that I hadn't checked my filesizes.

Anyway, I re-loaded your Kommander3.5.9 over the Kommander already running in LightHouse412rc2, MU's extra libraries (with only "These dependencies required by kommander-3.5.9 package are missing:
File /usr/lib/kde3/kimg_exr.so has these missing library files:
libIlmImf.so.6" to worry about), and your CowLog pet (thanks again!).

I can load CowLog ok (Tazoc already has Mplayer1.2+ and gawk loaded up in his puplet/SFS), but when I load a video file I can hear it running but the Mplayer fails to activate properly for viewing. I've had a gander at the CowLog scripting via the Kommander dialogue editor, but can't see how to re-establish a working link to Mplayer. Do you have any ideas on that regard, or were you able to see the video in your setup? What puppy base did you use - did you use one of MU's (as I can see I will be doing in future - the puplets mentioned above have way too much bling for my needs) or build your own?

Cheers!

P.S. I've already been in touch with Matti, and also with regard to developing a puplet with his videoscoring program heavily involved, plus a suite of other statistical software important to our field of animal ethology/comparative psychology. PuppyLinux providing yet another teaching/research too/environment, similar (I wish!) to BioPuppy.
First I need help getting out my tar and feathering.

Ok...first off, the missing library is below...

I'm using Puppy 4.1.2 with most of the KDE libs installed, as I use a few KDE apps like Konsole, Kompozer, Kopete, Kmix, K3b and off course Kommander. So if it's a dependency problem, in all likelyhood i've already got it.

As for the MPlayer problem, I have not tested that so I will and get back to you

Cheers, gposil.

Thanks very much for the library - I was going to sort out the dependency by myself in another, lighter puplet (like the barebones scenario you outlined). No warnings now in my Lighthouse base, Ta.
Still can't find how to link the Mplayer properly to CowLog for frame-by-frame analysis. I can confirm that it IS linked as I get responses to the grey play-speed buttons - but only the audio channel is feeding back. Line 1477 of CowLog.kmdr looks kosher to me (although utterly geek and indescipherababblish). I wonder if there is a missing wrapper (or whatever) like the "./ startCow" terminal command that is suggested in the CowLog manual for Ubuntu - of course I can't find any such file and it doesn't register as a routine in my rxvt. I'll try with other non-Lighthouse scenarios to see if that is my main issue.
I am very appreciative of all your help to now - please don't feel obliged to work on my windmill-tilting, I know you have other projects to hand.

I'll keep you posted re your Kommander pet in a start-from-scratch, in due course,
Thanks!

gposil, you beat to the answer... CowLog does output to sdl device as a default, because I had problems with x11 and xv (related to fglrx driver) on some of my test computers and sdl worked on all of them... So sdl maybe not needed in your system, but it certainly is in others.

Maybe I should put and option to CowLog that you can choose the video device... Never ran into problems with sdl before, so I didn't think I needed to. Thanks for your feedback!

Puppyt you'll only need to run the startCow script when using the tar.gz version, the CowLog command in the deb (and I guess in the pet) does the same thing. Still haven't had time to update the guide after building the deb though, sorry!

In the CowLog.kmdr file under the start button there is a command " ... mplayer -vo sdl... " and you can simply remove the -vo sdl part to get the default device or change sdl to some other device (see MPlayer manual).

gposil HAS COWLOG 1.0 PORTED TO PUPPY LINUX !

Mooochos grassias gposil !! ( couldn't resist).

I'm very excited about this development in open-source resources for researchers in the fields of animal behaviour and behavioural psychology. CowLog was recently developed by Matti Pastell & Laura Hänninen at the Research Center for Animal Welfare, University of Helsinki for Ubuntu and FreeBSD. It requires 'Kommander' in the KDE environment (plus Gawk and Mplayer) which not only permits digital video of any conceivable format to be scored, it also offers a configurable platform for scoring codes AND produces data files that integrate fully with the open-source and highly-powered 'R' statistical environment.

I won't hijack gposils Kommander thread any longer save to point out that his work has opened up new audiences and markets for Puppy Linux, in this side-branch alone. His support and tolerance for novice users of Puppy and their bad puns is warmly appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks Matti...the updated version of the CowLog pet already includes your change...and i've tested it now for a day or so and works perfectly...so all the dairy farmers out there can now puppyfy their technology... :)

Cheers gposil -

I've been using your fine work with Kommander and CowLog (and MU's Kommanderlibs pet) on range of puppy bases, and it's been tight as a drum, thankyou!

...alas the machines I have available won't run Puppy 4 very spectacularly- I have had problems installing Wine 1.1.19 (technosaurus' winelite version, plus his winegoodies tarball) in puppy412barebones-retro (some mysterious effects running CowLog from the commandline or the app in /usr/bin were generated too, making me suspicious - the exception to the rule, above), so have turned to ttuuxx's very recent offering of 214X3 as a possible base.

Everything loads beatifully (bar some 'soft' dependency warnings re the KDE minimal library pet linked with your other KDE thread) BUT of course I get the ol' GLIBCXX incompatibilities between puppy2 and puppy4, vis:
sh-3.00# ldd kmdr-editor
./kmdr-editor: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (requi red by /usr/lib/libkommanderwidget.so.0)
./kmdr-editor: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (requi red by /usr/lib/libkommanderwidgets.so.0)
(all other dependencies are registered correctly)
Do you have a possible workaround solution to this that WOULDN"T involving you recompiling your pet - I would much rather try other possible bases (puppy4's like Pulp003 or Turbopup Extreme, when it comes out) than take up even more of your time. I've checked out other threads where this has been a problem (e.g., audacity and classic invader threads) but no posted solution works yet for me.

Thanks
