See one of the howtos e.g. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22363 if you want to set up a Samba server, which is like normal Windows "file and printer sharing".
Otherwise you could set up an ftp server with software built into Puppy (look under network or something in the menu), or an NFS server or something.
For a music server I don't know... how do you want it to serve your music?
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

It would be a good idea to search for forum threads already dealing with this subject.
See "media server"
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42420

You will see mention of the following applications:
GMediaServer
ps3mediaserver
Firefly

Of course, if you have a SqueezeBox you will want SqueezeCenter -

disciple, thanks for the info.
Here is my plan with my two PCs ( both are 9+ years old)
PC-1 ( 800MHz, 512 RAM, 20GB HDD+80 GB HDD with 17"Monitor) with windows XP, Ubuntu and Puppy Linux) - This is the main PC I am using every day.
PC-2 ( PIII 450 Mhz - 128 RAM, PCI Audio Card with newly added500GB SATA HDD with Puppy Linux and with NO monitor) This is the machine I am planning to use as File and Music Server.
As a File server I want to store it with all my downloaded materials ( mostly FLAC audio and divx movies, Ebooks, Audio books, etc)
As a Music Server I want to connect this pc lineout to my Amplifier.

My ideas is to 1).access the PC-2 from PC-1 for READ/WRITE files (as file server) and
2).access PC-2 from PC-1 through remote desktop (VNC) and play music files from PC-2's soundcard, which is connected to my audio system.
Hope you can help me.

disciple provided the core information on how to network a Puppy-based server with Windows-and-Linux clients.

My information was related to specific streaming audio clients, which appears to be unrelated to your situation, now that you have fully explained your desired configuration.

Yes, that's the configuration I prefer; where the server is connected to the amplifier/speakers.
But most client/server audio configurations deal with the opposite situation; where the client is connected to the amplifier/speakers.

That sounds to me like a complex use of software for a relatively straightforward task.
I suggest you use MPD - Media Player Daemon

http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Music_Player_Daemon_Wiki
which is an elegant application designed specifically for what you want.

I want to shutdown PC-1 after use, but I still need to PC-2 ( music server) continue its "duties"
Is it possible with MPD client/server setup?

Yes.
MPD is installed on your server, and is left running as a daemon.
On your client computer you install one of the (many) MPD frontends, such as Sonata -

Of course, MPD is not a file server. You must deal with that separately.

Sorry for the delay reply. I was away during past couple of weeks.
tempestuous , I installed the mpd server in PC-1 and installed a client (gmpc) in PC-2. . Both machines are connected through a wired LAN but at present i cannot access the files in PC-1 from PC-2 with the GMPC client.
What configuratiion/settings i need to do in the server/client so that i can use the client(gmpc) in PC-2 to access the files in PC-1?

thanks in advance.

In gmpc Preferences > Connection
you must enter the IP address of your server in the "Host:" field.
Now restart gmpc, or just press "Connect".

Obviously mpd must be running on your server.

And another tip; in gmpc Preferences > Music Dir Fetcher
you must set the directory path to your music files (on the server).

thanks for the quick reply.
I tried by giving the ip address (192.168.0.10) in the host field and port no. 6600 in the port field. but still not connecting.
Should I enable any permissions to folder where I store the music files ?. The music file is stored at /mnt/sda6/musik folder in the server pc ( 192.168.0.10)

btw, I could not find Preferences > Music Dir Fetcher in my gmpc

while trying to connect, the gmpc shows the following error :
the error code 13: problems connecting "192.168.0.10" on port 6600 : Connection refused

Solved the above connection error problem.
I need to comment the bind_to_address localhost in the mpd.conf file
