connecting to gmail in Puppy 4.2

#1 Post by r22d22 »

This is a weird problem. In XP I access my gmail account in Firefox and Thunderbird without difficulty. Now I am learning Puppy 4.2 (painfully :? ) and trying to figure out how things work.

Using Seamonkey I can connect to my gmail account - no problem. However, I prefer Firefox and for some reason it will not connect to the gmail server It connects with all the other sites I have tried but not gmail.

Also, same problem with Seamonkey mail server. It tries but cannot make the connection with the Gmail server. What needs fixing?

Thanks Earl

Defining the connection. Aren't there ssl and/or login issues with gmail?
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).
Consult Wikka
Use peppyy's puppysearch

I get into gmail fine on both 4.2 and 4.2.1 (seamonkey), using both http and https.

At least we know it's possible.

Thanks folks. Chrome, I checked that page, then went over my Seamonkey settings. I changed the security settings to SSL and now can connect the Mail server.

Here is the new status working with Puppy 4.02
: Seamonkey web browser connects to gmail OK

Firefox web browser will not connect to Gmail.

Seamonkey mail client connects to gmail OK

Is that weird or what?

Maybe you can find some clues here
http://mail.google.com/support/

Like most gmail users on Puppy I have never had a problem - using
Seamonkey, Firefox, Opera, Dillo etc etc

Maybe it is possible you have tailored your modem settings connection with some security setting that Firefox is having difficulty with?

Let us know how you sort it out

Thanks Lobster. I checked with my ISP and there is no kind of firewall setting in my cable modem so the problem is originating in Puppy. I am having the exact same problem in Skype. In both gmail and Skype I set up new accounts and in both cases I could not log in even with the brand new settings. Is there some setting in Puppy that would cause the outgoing transmission to be modified somehow so the receiving server would misread the characters?

r22d22,

What version of Firefox are you using -- did you get it as a pet file or download it from the Mozilla site, or .... ?

Also, what if any add-ons or extensions are you using? I have Slaxer Puppy 4.12 to which I added the Firefox 3.5 pet, and get onto gmail just fine. However -- there is/was a bug in FF 3.5 where the browser crashes when you log out of Gmail; but there's a work-around. (I think you have to delete your preferences folder, whichever folder it was was empty when I deleted it, but the particulars are available in the bugzilla area of the Mozilla site.)

Those particulars might be helpful to figure it out. Another possibility is something to do with your cookies (?) -- if you aren't too squeamish about it you might want to try deleting your cookies then try gmail. What I mean by squeamish is that if you have a lot of websites (like this one) that remember who you are; if you delete your cookies they'll forget you and you'll have to re-enter stuff again, probably.

Thanks for the suggestions. This is where I got the dot pet file I downloaded.

I have the accuweather add-on but no others. I always delete my cookies at the end of a session. I do little surfing, usually only look for specific information. I will try the bugzilla site. I have never looked at it. Unfortunately I an so uninformed that I usually can't understand what I am reading.
