Hi, I'd like to help too I'm not that good at programming but I'm alright at graphics so I made an example of what the page could look like. Its just a template at the moment so if you like it I can get to work making individual JPEG's and PNG's for the coding and fix some mistakes that I made.

Guys I think the first thing we should look at is the layout and the very last thing to look at is the graphics, neither of the 2 screenshots posted above even has search, or version selection etc, and as using the default menu goes, I think thats just confusing for newbeeeeee's.
We need to look at what works for other distros theres only like 400 to choose from, it should be logical, Really Documents can hold business and personal if it done right, people could end up search around 3 locations to find one software title.
Something like a revamped Ubuntu, look at Ubuntu's J, They are missing a Search box on that page, That is a mistake it should be there on all the pages.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/
Some of the sections they have could be placed in others, the list is too large, But the basic idea is right, You have a logical section name, Then you have a brief description which helps users get used to the system and simplify things.
The Final thing that needs to be done is graphics, every web developer does graphics last, they uses blank images to make a template and change them in the end with look and feel (colour/images).
The main focus is content and functionality.
When It comes to graphics we should do it the way we did the logo, First we announce that a contest will be happening, and what its about, then lock the thread from post for like 2 weeks, So puppy users can spend some time actually building the images or look on the actual working model, Then you unlock the thread allow the users to post screenshots, and have a vote on it. simple. If we leave the thread unlock, then users will start voting on day one and you can only vote once and can't change your vote, so thats why I say lock it for 2 weeks so all images will be finished and it will be a even vote. Because the other method is almost first come first win.

A Database would allow search, viewing by version, author, date, etc. Appearance would be part of that, by allowing dynamic loading of content. But, would this be too much on the server? What options are available on this server?

One other thing, if you want to submit banners, then feel free to, but if your only good at graphics, then submit them, Having this site look professional is a must, Somehow I don't think hyperlinks on text will be the norm with this one, maybe dropdown down menus, Proper menu graphics which change somewhat on hover, etc Lets make it top notch. The last thing the layout needs look like like, that is was made with leafpad. It took me 2 yrs to learn Web development management in Tafe, And everything is functionality & look and feel, Look around at other professional done websites, we can do that, find some ideas, eg links and write down what you like and don't like and provide the links, So we can see what average users find handy, easy, appealing .

I created an online database for sfs files.....you can search for any thing in the database....and it's user. rather than webmaster, maintained.

The amount of fields, order of same and description can be changed.

I prefer databases rather than text/html offerings.

Right now, I am looking for derivatives based on 4.2.1 retro....a database with a field based on would simplify the search.

A field compatible would allow a note such as works with all versions > 2.1.4

Please feel free to visit the database at

I still think since Gposil server has Xoops, to use that and simply install one of the almost 1400 free themes, Nothing too flashy, like a white or light grey background and black or dark blue text, http://www.xoops.org/modules/extgallery/
Once the theme would be installed then just customize it to our needs. I see on the list the sever also has SMF, hmmm that could be useful also :)

Ps the reason why I would use Xoops is simple, its made for a software repo type application, it has, search, newest additions, top rated, most popular already built in. Why complicate something that can be simple and user friendly. You could even incorporate the wiki into into it because it even has top rated articles, Here's a basic one, would need changes, but just a blurry example :) http://www.xoops.org/uploads/extgallery ... _653bd.jpg

Thom good luck with the SFS database

I suggest a separate thread for its announcement and development

Lobster wrote:The page was quickly cobbled together as a simplistic example in Composer - so whatever our new store owners decide is fine with me

James (dawnsboy) and Schism can now add pets and have access to change the front page - organise and take advice, contact each other etc . . .

Good luck guys
the 1024 pixel wide image at the top makes small screen viewing of the whole page awkward .
however using https://launchpad.net/ would remove the need for any tinkering and enable vast amounts of views from their vast amounts of users. and have vast amounts of computer/bandwidth/maintenance/storage resources available from free. not to mention standardization and reliability.

Was it out of date for 4.2 or is it out of date because 4.2 is out of date?

It may have use for those that can't use other than 4.2, tho

And it also has helpful links that go to pages that don't work.

Many updated pets and SFS are now available . . .
so even a simple list like mine needs constant updating which I have not done

I think that's a problem with web pages, wiki entries, databases such as I set up for sfs files.....folks tend to get busy and forget to update the listing(s).

I created a wiki for a sub-set of the Amateur Radio community...and enlisted the aid of a few folks to monitor it....they keep it up to date, correct mistakes in entries and thus it's a good resource tool.

Hi Thom et al,

It's very difficult to be up to date without the developers doing the updates.

That being said maintainers are very hard to find here.

Maybe a new search engine would help...bring back Petch?

I'd really like to help out on this one :)
This would be a perfect thing for me cos i cant help with developing puppy, but i can help developing puppy websites :)
I have several years of experience with building websites and website-related things so that wouldnt be a problem.

As i read, the exact purpose of this site is to have some kind of website which shows all the packages in the repos, just like ubuntu and debian does? I don't think its necessary to do it just like ubuntu, i'd rather see the Linux Mint way of their software portal (http://linuxmint.com/software/).
What say you? :P
