Spam on wiki
Lobster - you can set an invitation code which make's life a bit more tricky for robot wiki spammers to register - there is also a captcha? on some such name that creates an image of a series of characters required to authenticate a registration as a real person. This is an "action" extension to wakka wiki I believe. I haven't gone to those lengths since the invitation code did it for us at http://www.weberp.org - the invitation code is listed on the login page so it is clear for folks - but rarely get spam now.
You can also set the default ACLs for comments to only allow registered users I think its a $ sign - you have to do this in the wakka.config.php to make it the default

there is a capcha here - maybe Raffy can add it

live
Live spammers also read captcha and invitation codes.
Adding users to the wiki is fast, so it's no problem if I handle it.
So far comments are for everyone, but admins can watch out for spam comments.

I've been looking through the formatting page, but I can't find how to force a CamelCase entry to NOT be a link. I'm sure there's a way to do this. Sometimes names of applications use CamelCase in their name and you don't want it to link back to itself.
DOH!! I just figured it out. Double quotes are the trick. ""TeXt""

New wiki problems
OK. I guess I was not clear enough before but the new Wikka Wakka Wiki install has been unreasonably slow and often gives different Query Failed errors with "MySQL server has gone away" at the end. For example when the page won't load it gives me an error like this:
Now sometimes the page loads fine and sometimes I've waited over 30 minutes to try to load a page before giving up.
This blog post gives a lot of tips as to why we might be getting these errors but it doesn't look easy to fix. Do we have a shared hosting plan with HostGator or is it a dedicated server? Who has the kind of admin access to fix these errors besides Raffy (so they can also be notified)?
I answered my own question on why we don't just upgrade the original wiki when I looked up who was hosting what and noticed that Barry is still hosting the old wiki and we (the Puppy community) are hosting the new ones. It also makes sense to start over with afresh so its less cluttered with old versus new. Although until these issues are fixed I don't see a point to using the new wiki. So we could also just revise and delete portions of the old wiki and use that if the new wiki and our current webhost is not working together well (like with Drupal).
Code: Select all
Query failed: SELECT COUNT(tag) FROM wikka_pages WHERE tag='HomePage' AND latest='Y' (MySQL server has gone away)

Good points, J_Rey, thanks.J_Rey wrote:It also makes sense to start over with afresh so its less cluttered with old versus new. It looks like we cant run both Drupal and the new wiki together, as Drupal causes "out of memory" error in the server.
Prit would know how to handle this. Will communicate with him.

Figured it out
Well, after I registered for the new wiki, my problems disappeared. So it looks like it is a known problem with all current Wikka versions. Admins please implement the solution, when you can. Thanks!
Edit: edited URLs to include comments which seem to have a workaround till a new version is released.

I found some reasons why we are having slow DNS and other problems by looking at the results from:
http://www.intodns.com/puppylinux.org
Please complain to HostGator and include that link as to why.
Also, I edited my links to include the comment that has the patch code in it and is specifically currently found at:
http://wush.net/trac/wikka/browser/bran ... .php#L1669
Thanks!

Thanks to J_Rey's work, I have modified the code accordingly.
Let us know if the change causes any problem.

Eric, (Caneri), raffy and others will be aware of how
the biggest problem with any site is commercial spammer bots
Well . . .
the wiki at the moment gets the occasional spam comment
linking to the usual porn and 'wood straightening' medication
I delete those
This morning 3 arrived (deleted those) and changed the access for that page to registered user - a shame.
So more editors welcome (write to raffy - PM from this site) to keep an eye on the site
Thanks guys

Hi Lobster,
I will investigate more on wikka wiki and anti-spam methods, and comment . I think this will be a much better aproach.
Did drupal have spam?
Edit:
This is interesting, tho not intended for wikka wiki:

Hi there. Didn't have the time today.
Sorry.
Anyway, some investigation I did on the past, shows that a simple text captcha stop almost 90% of the spam. Wouldn't that be nice?
I'll find some links for implementing those in wikka, and, if impossible, when possible, I'll try to give a hand.
Can't make promises though.
Two minutes on my cibercafe time left,
Cheers!, And good luck!
