Using on Pentium 3, 733mhz, 512 meg of Ram

#1 Post by JMT74 »

Yeah, I recently tried the liveCD version of Ubuntu 9.04 on an old Compaq Pent. 3, 733mhz, 512 meg of ram computer and it ran very slow. Thought that was a bit odd seeing it worked fine in my Pentium 4, 2.66Mhz, 512 meg of ram Dell computer. I guess the Pentium 3 and slower processor speed on the Compaq made the difference. My question is will Puppy Linux work fast on a Pentium 3, 733Mhz, 512 meg of ram computer? If so is there a way to install to the hard drive without having to use a cd to boot live to everytime? Thanks.

Puppy should work soundly on those specifications.

To install to the hard drive, from the live CD check out the "Puppy universal installer", which can be found under Menu -> Setup -> Puppy universal installer. There are guides in the forums on how to configure the setup properly, but it should be fairly straight forward anyway.

This is almost exactly the setup I have on my box.

I used to run Xubuntu on it until I got sick and tired of the lousy performance and switched to Puppy. I will never go go back. Everything is fast and it works. Puppy will make your pc happy :)

Pop in your live CD and follow the directions here:

Make sure you run Gparted before you install. It will just make your life easier.

Welcome and enjoy!!

Well I don't know some odd things happening on Puppy Linux. Internet runs fine except watching videos on Youtube is slower than on Windows. I went from 128 in that machine to 512mb thinking that would fix that issues. It didn't. I am guessing the Pentium 3 , 733mhz processor speed is the problem for herky jerky videos on youtube. My brother won't be happy. Guess he will be disappointed. Porn now is slower to lol. Any fixes to make video smooth? Thanks.
