4.3 Beta 1 -- bugs and reports
GRUB , well this is the first time I have ever experienced a
problem with the GRUB.
This report is being delivered via the v4.3 Live CD in action.
The problem I am having is that I can't find the menu.1st in the
GRUB - this is my set up on a small 10mb partition as used with
all the previous versions of Puppy .
As this is a frugal install I first tried, and then
changed to a full install but still no go!
What's missing in the script code?

Arggghhhh. Forum is so annoyingly slow, or not working at all .....
Well I've been trying to post since first post here now, forum just hung at first page and wouldn't load any others.
@Lobster......., I don't understand your problem with Psync, as far as I know it's the first report as such. New version 0.9 (in 423) copes with large offsets.
@Barry......... Wireless keyboard recognised 'out the box' with this kernel.
Same reports as others really, can't get Firefox 3.5 to load no matter how I try different ways.
New frugal install, load dbus libs then FF3.5 , just no joy, reports instance already running, although not.
New frugal, load FF3.5 then libs, then try run, no action. Console just shows run then prompt but nothing happens.
Like it so much in tuuxxx's 214R i wanted it in 423 as well
Request: Return of Geany.
What I miss is the 'execute' function in Geany for debugging scripts and getting error reports. A vital accessory for scripting easily. Can't find any such in Medit.

The main point I was trying to make is that there is no indication that anything was wrong. To a newbe to Puppy / linux everything seems to be working, even an address if you don't know any better.Béèm wrote:No confusion.
You got what is called a APIPA address and you can't go on internet with this one.
Connect the cable and do the network wizard again
maybe the popup - "Network connection of eth0 SUCCESSFUL" could be suppressed

DC,
If you want to make a point, be as clear as possible.
I agree that the message is misleading.
The script could check if you got a non-valid IP for connection to the internet and could issue a message like: IP obtained but not valid for internet connection.
But even then a newbie wouldn't know how to correct this, but at least the person who want to help would know.

Hi, All -
I have been observing and trying to figure out this problem since puppy version 4.1.2. On 1024 x 600 screen displays such as my Acer Aspire One and a friend's Dell Mini, the drive icons pile up on top of each other when loaded. This does not happen at all with 1024 x 768 resolutions (haven't tried 800 x 600 resolution).

Ok here is some feedback on kernel 2.6.29.6
How i managed to run firefox 3.5,
First add libdbus-1.so.3 and libdbus-glib-1.so.2 to usr/lib
then
1 install firefox3.5 to my-applications
2 copy all libraries from firefox folder in my-applications to usr/lib
3 copy firefox from the firefox folder to desktop, seticon using one of the mozicon icons in the icon folder.
4 reboot
Also for the more adventureous among you,
I have run Barry`s latest creation with different kernels simply by installing them via pets. One important thing to remember is when uninstalling a kernel you must reinstall another before shutting down.
Have fun.

Lobster just get unsquashfs from series 4 , while running this version, then drop the sfs on-top of the unsquashfs bin and it will extract in root, then rename the folder and make a new sfs.

Thanks ttuuxxx
Fortunately Trio came up with this solution program

guess I'll update my script thenBarryK wrote:/etc/puppyversion not used anymore. Look in /etc/DISTRO_SPECS01micko wrote:Not in mine, this little script I wrote depends on it...DC wrote: P.S. /etc/puppyversion - missing
(um, for me /etc/puppyversion is definitely still there, I just checked, "puppy pfix=ram", is it used in the welcome note?)

more re Firefox in 2.6.29.6 vs. 2.6.25.16-SCSI
tubby, thank you so much. I have been trying to make my usual remastered CD with Firefox, and at least there is one way for it to work in .29.6 now. Questions:(tubby wrote)...kernel 2.6.29.6

- 1. "install firefox3.5 to my-applications" Do you mean from source, or by unpacking a .pet, or ? The firefox .pets I've used install under /usr.
2. Where did you get those versions of the libdbus libraries?
I tried a firefox 3.5.2.pet (coolpup's?), and dbus-1.2.4.2permissive & dbus-glib-0.78 .pets - same result.
The only difference I found in the two liveCD environments is from comparing "lspci -v". In 2.6.25.16-SCSI, I see seven lines that are similar to
Code: Select all
Capabilities: [80] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit- Queue=0/0 Enable-

First impressions - No upgrade-of-multisession this time (too much headscratching trying to fix what was). Browser profiles such as they are can be copied/overwritten - that actually works better with Opera than SM, imo (extensions, version changes usw). Took awhile to do 'fresh', but a bit less messing about.
Jwm's been upped? Looked about the same to me until I did the 456+beta2 (thanks Joe and Patriot) - beta2 can actually be 'shorted' to 2 or perhaps only 1 file(s) and some minor edits if desired (sometimes I like the translucent eyecandy and fading windows).
fotoxx's fm could use some better scaling - folder images too big, fonts text display as a bit smallish.
Imagination looks real nice, Trio's jwmthememaker is good for a gui to make a basic jwmtheme. The old gview works better for me as a default image viewer (but only imo .. it's an acquired taste), by default it only scales down as needed. gdmap and isomaster look better in the menu with their own icons (again imo, some folks read the text).
Mounting doesn't seem like much of an issue - I imagine it'll be smoothed out by final (minor annoying twostep on 2nd leftclick of desktop driveicon .. also replug of thumbdrive needed for detection at times). I guess the squash-mess compatibility will depend on what kernel is used for final (didn't test the converter since I generally don't boot-mount extra sfs' and clickmount/unmount was only troublesome on the ppa-422 multisession liveCD for me).
Short story - somewhere along the line on this tester (probably on a save), the gtk I was using got *one* .png mangled .. result was almost all apps that use gtk were pretty much useless in the gui, they'd flicker and quit (can a Rox filer window be displayed without gtk? how about non-console editors? how about the gtk-selector? welcome to the console, n00Bz ). Finally got it sorted, but it occurred to me that perhaps some minimal gui that's not dependant on gtk might be of advantage (or not).

It is not working for me though. I used my dbus libs and your dbus libs, neither one helped.
Is it possible that you have done something else that might be helping? Have you done anything else to 4.3 beta 1? You are using kernel 2.6.29.6--I am just trying to think of what might be different on your machine and mine.
By "copy all libraries from firefox folder in my-applications to usr/lib" do you mean all files that begin with "lib..."? And only from the firefox folder, and not from any of the subfolders in firefox?
