On startup i get message" Operating system not found" so I put puppy cd in to retreive my personal data prior to recovery.
I see one hard drive with nothing on it!
what do i do to see my other hard drive.

Can you please supply a bit more information?
How many physical hard disks are in the machine? What operating system was on it? Have you any idea why it failed? Did it make any noises before it failed?
If you were using windows, it is possible that your C:\ and D:\ drives are partitions on a single drive which would probably show up as sda1.
