[Solved] Puppy 4.3 beta 3 [kernel panic] will not boot full

#1 Post by Jon_J »

See post #5 for solution. This is a full install of Puppy
I'm trying this beta because 424 and this one (425) detects my hard drive on my Dell mini-10 netbook, and seems to run smoothly from the CD boot image.
I tried 4.2.1 standard and my drive wasn't detected.

BTW, what is the difference between the "regular" version and the "SCSI" version?
I tried the SCSI version with both above betas.
I did a full install of pup-525-SCSI and updated my Grub file as instructed.
When rebooting the first time to 525, I get:

Code: Select all

kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
I rebooted 525 using the CD and reformated the partition from ext2 to ext4.
I was hoping that would fix the above issue, it did not. I also ran drive check within Gparted and there were no errors on this partition.

I tried the non-SCSI version last night and it gave me the same error as above. I have to shut it down with the power button, by holding it down 8 seconds.
After I posted in the "bugs" section, I realized that was probably the wrong place to post about computer problems.
I would really like to get a later kernel to work on this netbook.
The only '4' version I have got to install is puppy-4.1.2retro-k2.6.21.7
The newer ones don't recognize my hard drive.
According to the forum at "mydellmini" it is a 2.5 SATA drive.
So I tried the 4.3 beta2 and beta3. Both of these versions recognize my hard drive and install without any errors, until I try to boot, then I get the error as in my first post.

Edited, problem solved It now boots fine. :)
Linux Mint wants to name the partitions "sda"
Linux Mint also updated my Grub file last week.
(Maybe this is why the other Puppy '4xx' versions wouldn't detect my hard drive)
Puppy uses the partition named as "hda"

I changed my menu.lst entry for puppy from this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6 ro quiet
to this:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 ro quiet

The sda stuff also led me to believe I needed to try the SCSI version yesterday.

googling my error msg found this page, and that's what made me look at the partition naming in menu.lst
