Black Desktop Puppy 430

#1 Post by ohenenana »

I have just spent the whole day installing puppy 4.30 even used the 4.31.1 iso to get firefox 3.5.3 working. Things were great and I decided to install Midnight Commander which I always find very very very usefull at the command line.

I saw a discussion in one of Barry's blogs I think or maybe on one of the forums...

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source ... u6flt9pN3w

about the MC pet still only being available in pet_packages_3 and that a dependancy is needed. Fine,, so I got the .pet plus the gpm .pet

Installed both and saw that the notice about updating menu did not update menu. also rebooted after tis to see if menu would update and that is when the screen went black.

Can anyone please help. I realize this may be nothing to do with mc and gpm but I have removed them anyway with no joy.

I can access apps with the lefthand corner menu and also with a rightclick on desktop but some apps (roxfiler for instance) refuse to open or I cannot see them. Others like rxvt & packagemanager display fine.

I have checked xorg.conf and even gone as far as installing xorgfull pet and have checked that the pupin file is there.

My next attempt at fixing this will be to reinstall puppy 430 unless someone can shed some light.

IBM T22, frugal install of 430

Cheers all

With a frugal install you can just delete your pup_save.2fs, that'll mean you can start again without having to reinstall Puppy. You will lose all your settings and any apps that you've downloaded, but at least you won't have to reinstall Puppy, that means you don't have to setup Grub or any of your drives again.

And with a frugal install, if you backup a good pup_save.2fs file, then, if in future you lose some functionalities, just copy the backed up pup_save, and your back at your working setup.

I've had this 'black desktop of death' twice since i've started using puppy
about six weeks ago. The only thing I can tell you is to make sure you back
up your pup_save file frequently. :(
