If you're curious to get to the bottom of the issue... run this command from a console (rxvt):

Code: Select all

#mut mutclient --debug --noserv --nothreads > mut.txt
It'll create a log of all the actions that it takes while its scanning your hardware. Send me the output log file 'mut.txt' and I'll let you know what is going on.

Jesse
Hi Jesse.

I just tried to send mut.txt via PM, and got the following error message:
Couldn't get mail server response codes

DEBUG MODE

Line : 116
File : smtp.php
So will try to upload it here.

BTW. I also tried invoking the MUT mode from the Pmount preferences menu under Puppy 4.3.1 (IIRC, my previous attempts were only in Puppy 4.2.1). This time, it didn't disable Pmount, but it didn't run MUT either. All that happened was that Pmount took a LOT longer to open it's window. And when opened, it looked exactly as always, no sign of MUT, even though the MUT box remains ticked...

The Extension txt is not allowed
Well, then I guess this is the only way?

Hi Otropogo,

I've spotted the problem, Your floppy disk drive is not happy being probed by Mut:

1257457679.832: PROBLEM: THB7DE18D0 read of 512 bytes only got -1
1257457679.833: INFO: THB7DE18D0 Did not read 512??? got 0

Mut attempts to read some data from the floppy drive to identify the filesystem and drive label, but the read operation fails after a few seconds.
If you don't use your floppy drive, I'd say just unplug it (when the power is off!!!), and then de-select it in the Bios.
Alternatively you might have a dud floppy in the drive, removing it may just fix it.
If your floppy disk isn't formatted to the standard format, that could also be the problem, Mut makes the assumption that the floppy drive is just a plain old standard variety.

Will try this, thanks.

Will also try this later. Can't right now as I'm test driving Seamonkey 2.0 under TinyCore/Ultilex 5.0.0

Will post results later today

Have explored and disproven that possibility now.

Also noted another anomaly:

As mentioned before, when I tick the preferences box in Pmount to select MUT, nothing appears to change in the Pmount window. However, there IS a big change in performance.

With the MUT box checked, there's a delay of 30 seconds from the moment of clicking on the pmount icon before the Pmount window opens on the desktop. With the MUT box unchecked, the delay is only 3 seconds.

Have done this three or four times in a row now, and the results are consistent.

Will try to get around to disabling the floppy later today.

Hi Otropogo,

Another alternative may be to edit the Pmount script and change these two lines (about line 60):

PROBEPART='mut --noserv probepart' #v407
PROBEDISK='mut --noserv probedisk2' #v407

to this:

PROBEPART='mut probepart' #v407 (removed --noserv)
PROBEDISK='mut probedisk2' #v407 (removed --noserv)

This will let Mut run as a proper disk service, the option "--noserv" means to scan the hardware directly without using the client-server connection for a hardware list.
The mut server is supposed to ignore drives that have unresponsive IO commands, unless the command eventually comes back ok, so it might just be able to skip over the floppy drive while it is locked up.
Unfortunately when an IO lockup happens like what it is for you, the thing that stops and waits is kernel code, and its probably doing that for a very good reason, but just unfortunate for your circumstance.

OK. How do I find this script?

BTW I logged this in the 'bug database', got some suggestions by e-mail from puppy_development@googlecode.com, tried them and tried to report my results via gmail, only to have my message bounce with the following explanation from gmail:

-
--- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<puppy-development@googlecode.com>
(reason: 554 5.4.6 Too many hops)
I tried again, and same thing...

type into a terminal "which pmount" and the response will probably be /usr/sbin/pmount
You can open it with a text editor like leafpad or geany.

I don't know anything about puppy_development@googlecode.com, your guess is as good as mine on that front.

Ok. Done that. But before I got your reply, I disabled the floppy drive in BIOS, without disconnecting it from the power supply. After that, the 25 second delay in opening Pmount with the MUT option selected disappeared.

I didn't see any difference in operation after making the change in the pmount script. The Pmount window looks exactly the same whether MUT is selected or not.

In the old days, there was an obvious gui difference between the two, but then I think some versions of puppy, or maybe it was some puplets, rewrote the script so that it kept the same interface. The mount methods were both available and the mounting "engine" changed when you selected the other version, but the interface looked the same. I'm not running the same version that you are, so I can't verify. You say you don't see any difference in operation -- does MUT work now or is it still crashing your system?

It never crashed my system, selecting the MUT option merely disabled the Pmount gui, and made USB strage devices inaccessible when I started this thread.

After the recovery suggested earlier in the thread, it stopped doing that (so what was going on originally still remains unclear), and merely delayed operation of Pmount by some 25 seconds.

Jesse's deduction that this lesser malfunction was caused by a problem in the floppy drive appears to be on the money, because disabling the drive in BIOS made the operation identical whether "MUT" was checked or unchecked. But I see no evidence that MUT is running at all when selected in the Pmount gui.

In previous versions, MUT's operation was quite different from Pmount's, both graphically and functionally.

Most notably, although the Puppy Universal Installer offers installation to LS120 Superfloppy, in version 3.01 Retro, which I still run on a laptop, pmount wouldn't run at all if there was an LS120 disk inserted in the drive. And the only way to "sort of" access the disk was with MUT (but only to install Puppy, because even MUT couldn't mount it properly for reading or writing via ROX).

I managed, with great difficulty, and after many failed attempts (after which the disk was inevitably corrupted and had to be reformated under Windows), to successfully boot Puppy 3.01 Retro from an LS120 disk.

But it was an empty victory, because, while 30.1 R would boot alright, it wouldn't load into memory, or run from the hard drive, but continually accessed the LS120, making operation excruciatingly slow. I finally managed a frugal install and haven't really used the LS120 for years now.

I don't have an LS120 drive installed on this desktop system, so I can't test this with Puppy 4.3.1 at the moment. While the LS-120 drive is superior to a floppy, with three times the write speed and eight times the capacity, it runs off the IDE channel, and so deprives the system of a hard drive. It also requires specific BIOS support.

Barry said he was going to try fixing LS-120 support a year ago, but I haven't heard anything more since then...

But there were other differences. IIRC in Puppy 3.9, MUT had its own tab on the Start/filesystem menu. And, unlike Pmount, it would show the location, size, and mount state of any linux swap partitions on the system.

I just tried typing "mut" from a terminal in Puppy 431 scsi.
It did not disable Pmount.
But something interesting showed up.
sde is an external usb floppy drive with a 1.44meg floppy inserted.

I got:
# mut
sda: 320GB disk sata 2 partitions
sdb: 203GB disk ide 3 partitions
sdc: empty disk scsi ZIP 250
sdd: empty disk usb MP390 Series
sde: 1.47MB disk usb 1 partitions
sr0: cdrom sata DVD-RAM GH10L

Notice the reported size of the floppy (sde)?
I would have thought it would show 1.44MB

I think linux doesn't bother to look for floppy drives if they are disabled in the BIOS, so switching it off there is what has stopped your problem from occurring.
Yes the Pmount window does look very similar on most systems, on some systems there is some minor differences, but either engine will be scanning the same hardware, so no surprises there. With mut selected (and without the --noserv option) you might notice fewer hard disk accesses during a refresh, as opposed to the regular engine. Depending on number of drives and speed of the machine, you could notice a speed improvement with mut.
But both are pretty quick.

Yes Floppys have always been 1.44Mb, but the way mut calculates "MB" is by dividing by 1000, not the traditional 1024, it adds up. Your 320GB drive might only be 299 actual GB... you can usually work it out on a calculator. I decided to go with calculating it based on 1000, because we like to feel good about our hard drives being the size stated that we purchased.

Curse you Jesse - for falling for this redefined MB size. I thought you were a developer ;)

My take on the matter can be found here:
http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/features/050807fe.htm

I always used to prefer your MUT to PMount in the Puppies with tcl that had the unique MUT GUI.

These days, when it is the same GUI but you choose which engine to use I am ambivalent - although I do like the drive icons on the desktop and how they operate, which never happened with the classic MUT.

Perhaps it's a coincidence, but since making the above change, I've observed the desktop icon for the CD-ROM drive repeatedly shift position so that it sits on top of the "home" drive, and almost completely obscures it.

I can drag and drop it back to its original position at the right hand end of the line of drive icons, but I can't replicate the overlapping position by the same method.

Update: here's a screenshot of the icon shift. It occurs immediately on bootup. (I guess I really should have named it "no_noserve...")

Yeah, I think the issue is that the CD-ROM drive icon gets removed then re-added with a different icon visual, but without its location being remembered for the update... it is rather annoying.
I'm using 4.1.1 and on this version, if there is no cd in the drive, there is no icon. So I just have all my permanent drive icons shifted up a bit, and the CD icon comes in on a clear bit of desktop.
