I am not a good tester, because I couldn't find anything to fault, running 484beta1 on a nettop Asrock ION 330
But, just like madcrow I wanted to adjust the source list, to point to local Debian sources. I played with line 5 and 8 of DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS, but no luck. This is due to my lack of competence, I'm sure. But it would be nice if a future version could have a little script handling this...

Dpup 484 is impressive! It is fast, clean, good-looking and many little details show a lot of work has gone into this, a true labor of love.

Thanks Guy!

1. gprs connect is failing to connect at all.
#pgrps-connect gives bash command not found.
no gprs links in network menu
gprs-connect-chatmm doesn't do anything

2. keeps asking for keyboard layout and time zone on each boot
3,first run wizard similarly keeps appearing after boot..

goodpoints: pfind can now find things again after failures in other recent puppies
aarf, point 1 noted and fixed in 484beta2, but I can't duplicate your point 2 and 3 problem...is anyone else having this issue...

Thanks for report.
2. Has solved itself somehow while 3. Is solved by clicking the apply button instead of just closing it with the top right (X).

Acer backlight problem:
lsmod acer, nothing found

Code: Select all

modprobe acer-wmi
after that i can find with pfind files:

Code: Select all

/initrd/pup_ro2/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/drivers/video/backlight
/lib/modules/2.6.30.5/kernel/drivers/video/backlight
/sys/class/backlight
/sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/backlight

Code: Select all

echo 1 or 7 > sys/class/backlight/acer-wmi/brightness
does not change brightness but no error also.

Dpup control panel>misc>firewall has issues. Fire wall in network menu is ok. Control panel >wireless goes to older different pwireless.

Audacity and PPM

#66 Post by tubeguy »

2 probs so far: Tried installing Audacity from PPM and from the ibiblio Puppy5 pet, both install fine but won't start. Also PPM does not show Debian repos. Otherwise smooth sailing.

Edit: Nevermind the thing about the Debian repos. My flub.

Shouldn't it be

Code: Select all

echo 7 > /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/backlight/acer-wmi/brightness
Try that

Wireless driver update in 484?

#74 Post by tubeguy »

I've noticed I'm getting better throughput with my PCMCIA wireless connection, like 20-30% better, since starting with 484. Was there an update to the RaLink RT2500 driver?

Just applied the latest patch for Dpup484 - the one with the Debian repo fix.

I'm doing a Package Manager update and notice that it seems to be updating from the Debian "main" package database.

Since the latest 484 is based on Debian Squeeze (as far as I know) should this update not be connecting to the Debain "testing" database instead of Debian "main"?

Or am I missing something here?

We aren't going to migrate the database till Squeeze becomes stable...the system files are Squeeze backports to Lenny....

I have installed the control panel patch and still have problem with wireless. before it would start old version of pwireless, after I installed the patch nothing starts.

Note**** I have installed the Pwireless2 pet discussed earlier in the thread, so I am not sure if that could be the problem or not.

so what is the best method to upgrade to 484?

#78 Post by gnz11 »

i have the 484b1 iso and the patches.
the listing for 484b2 is just a md5sum

should i run the delta and then burn the iso or will the patches do the same thing?

Acer backlight problem
My echo should have worked also because there were symlinks.

Code: Select all

echo 7 > /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/backlight/acer-wmi/brightness
didnt change brighness and

Code: Select all

echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi/backlight/acer-wmi/brightness
didnt also, but when I rebooted and did

Code: Select all

modprobe acer-wmi
again I noticed that bluetooth light started !!! So there was indication that acer-wmi has effect.

So could there be some module which inhibits backlight manipulation.

Fn + arrow left or right keys does not change brightness as they should.

484beta2 will be out later today...should we keep the same thread or go for a new one...

One other thing...484beta2 introduces a Sanboxed Dpup SafeBrowser in the Internet Menu. This is an isolated non-root user browser which deletes it's own cache, history and settings, the moment you close it. It's user home directory is /tmp. so when you reboot it, it also tidies up any leftovers....

Cheers
