Beautiful, but cold!

That is best enjoyed as a picture to me, that is too cold!
Is that the actual temperature or the wind chill?

It was actual temperature. It has been coldest two weeks in many years. So that you believe it really was cold, here is another picture of my daughter after two hours of cross-country skiing at -23 celsius. :)
My cellular phone camera lens was foggy so picture is not best, but you can see how cold it was.

Hi Guys
I have a problem. I installed Lighthouse 4.43d (frugal install) and installed truecrypt 6.3a. When I want to mount truecrypt partition I get an error:
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory.
sudo: cannot get working directory
mount: according to mtab, truecrypt is already mounted on /tmp/.truecrypt_aux_mnt1

I have never encountered this problem when using Puppy 4.x

Do you have idea how to fix it ??

gregoryj,
If you are mounting in a terminal, try 'mount-FULL' instead of 'mount'. Both are in /bin but mount was modified for multi-user logons and special handling of NTFS partitions.

If not, please post the method or URL used to install truecrypt and I will install it and try to reproduce the error.

Frank Cox,
Wine 1.1.33 is included in Lighthouse Pup. If you would post the method or URL you use to install esword 9.5 I'll give it a try.

LHP 4.43 F work-in-progress

#187 Post by tazoc »

Here's a screenshot of work-in-progress, including Sakura terminal to replace the rxvt-LHP console, and three new Superkaramba themes to be included in the KDE4 SFS: Sidebar, Sidebar_Net and CdKase. The latter shows album covers from and controls Amarok.

The Sakura terminal was suggested by Pemasu and its background is the rings of Saturn. Earth is the pale blue dot near bottom center in the terminal window.

I just downloaded the program fromhttp://www.e-sword.net/ and it installed it into ~wine_Drive_C/Program Files/E-word/esword.exe.

I can't make it execute. In Ubuntu I used the E-sword installer but I do not know how to make it work in Puppy.
The info on the installer is available here:
-http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=404042

I think the installer is just to add the modules but I could be wrong.

Startmount has also matured to useful small program by 01micko and tasmod. Enables automounting and you can also configure programs to launch at boot time like email or browser or ...

e-Sword v9.5.1 in Wine

#191 Post by tazoc »

Frank Cox,
I just tried installing http://www.e-sword.net/files/setup951.exe to Wine 1.1.33 and got an "1152 Error extracting C:\Windows\Temp..." When I looked in that directory I found some .msi files and the setup.ini hints that the Windows Installer 'instmsiw.exe' may be needed. I don't know if wine can install it.

The appdb.winehq.org for v9.0 simply notes
"Use winetricks to install mfc42" means
$ cp mfc42.dll ~/.wine_Esword/drive_c/windows/system32
But I don't think that would fix the installer. Anyone else have an idea?

I dont know how to mount-FULL with truecrypt. Sorry, but I am a linux newbie. I tried
'truecrypt --mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/tc1' - this causes an error I mentioned
'truecrypt --mount-FULL /dev/sdc1 /mnt/tc1' - dont work

I used truecrypt 6.3a from this link:

gregoryj,
I installed Truecrypt 6.3a from the pet you linked to. I'm creating an encrypted volume to test with and it is asking whether to format the new volume as none, FAT, ext2 or ext3. Which one did you choose?
-TazOC
Update: I'm getting the same error you did, even with mount and mount-FULL replaced with versions from Puppy 4.3.1. So far I'm stumped.

Truecrypt workaround for LHP 4.43d

#194 Post by tazoc »

gregoryj,
OK, I think I've found a workaround:
First replace /bin/mount-FULL and /bin/umount-FULL with versions from Puppy 4.3.1. (Both are attached below.)

Then start Truecrypt and click Settings; Preferences; System Integration; then click the box in Kernel Services ("do not use kernel cryptographic services".) When it prompts 'Are you sure?' answer Yes and click OK.

LightHouse full install 4.43 Mariner

#195 Post by rokytnji »

Ok. I guess the definition of insanity is repeating a action expecting a different outcome.

Well. I like full installs of puppy Linux usually. Just a preference is all. I have Puppy running on at least one .
partition on all my Laptops. So I am no stranger to installing.

This is the third Laptop I have tried a full install and the same problem in Lighthouse shows up. This time it is on my Panasonic CF-48 P4, 1.2 gig of ram, 100 gig HD

I use another Linux Distro (Mint XFCE 4.6) grub to boot puppy. I manually add Lighthouse to mints /boot/grub/menu.lst

Lighthouse boots up just fine to where you get the xorg selection window. From there it just goes into a loop no matter whether you pick vesa, force xorg/vesa, exit,you name it.

I know I can do a frugal install. But I wanted to make sure that this symptom wasn't tied to just one computer. All boot up ok in Live mode and Wireless hooks up just fine. INSTALLING goes with out any hitch. Like I said. Lighthouse boots up fine to Xorg/Xwin selection screen on all installs.

Tested (same symptom/problem) on Panasonic CF-48, IBM T23, Acer Aspire One ZG5. Acer aspire one I used a live USB instead of cd like on the older 2 laptops.

Just posting this for info. I haven't gone through all the posts Tazoc to see if I am just repeating a issue you already know about. Happy Trails Rok. (I can be a stubborn cuss I guess :lol: )

I tried this procedure (both installer & manual installation) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... ll+e-sword with version 9.51 and have not been successful with puppy. This procedure works great with ubuntu/Kubuntu and eSword runs much faster on them than on Windows. This is the main application that I miss from Windows. I have been able to get versions 8.05 and older to work, however, the default fonts (size 11) are too small and I haven't been able to change them which makes the program undesirable.

I hope that we can get esword to work on Lighthouse under wine. Thankfully, we have your Bibletime sfs which the best linux KDE alternative to eSword.

EDIT: I was successful in getting e-Sword 951 to run on Lighthouse. I took extreme shortcuts though, since I already had a successful installation using Kubuntu on my computer. I followed these steps to copy files from my Kubuntu installation to get it to work:
1. Copied .wine_Esword directory to the root directory, it shows up in the directory next to .wine.
2. Copied .wineeswordcache directory to the root directory.
3. Copied .winetrickscache directory to the root directory.
4. Copied .local/share/icons directory to the /root/.local/shares directory
5. Opened the .wine_Esword directory and deleted these files since they applied to the Kubuntu installation, .update-timestamp, userdef.reg, user.reg. These files will be regenerated when esword.exe is run.
6. Created an e-Sword.desktop file:

Code: Select all

Name=e-Sword
Exec=esword.sh
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Path=/root/.wine_Esword/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/e-Sword/
Icon=/root/.local/share/icons/0407_newshortcut2_7679641b0a7c4de18f8d8bdf4020e6db.0.png
Categories=WordProcessor
Note: esword.sh is created using a text editor to create an esword.txt file with this

Code: Select all

env WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_Esword wine "C:\Program Files\e-Sword\e-Sword.exe"
It must then be renamed to esword.sh, made executable using

Code: Select all

chmod +x /your location/esword.sh
and placed in the bin directory.
7. E-Sword may be run using the esword.sh file, the e-sword.desktop file or from a console using this

Code: Select all

env WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_Esword wine "C:\Program Files\e-Sword\e-Sword.exe"
This is a roundabout way to get e-Sword 951 to work, however, now we know for sure that we can run it in Lighthouse. Also, the real advantage of this approach is that if you have a working e-Sword using wine that you may easily create a backup by copying the above files to your backup location, also the installation is portable and may be transferred to other computers. This is possible because Rick Meyers chose not to use the Windows registry for his e-Sword program. :D

TazOC,
Do you know why the drive icons are changing with the jwm desktop as seen on the attached screenshot?
Thanks,
Jim

I get a error message that flys by really fast. Holding the enter key and letting it continually loop. The gist of it is that I think Xorg is a read only file after a full install. Hence it can't be written to. Hence the loop.

rokytnji,
I did two full installs (screenshot attached) to an ext3 partition and could not reproduce the error/loop. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it is writable. If Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't exit the loop I would boot with 'pfix=nox' and try 'xorgwizard-puppy' on the command line or archive and attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf to a reply. What type of partition are you installing to? If you try again I would reformat it with GParted to ext3 before using Puppy Universal Installer.

If I can think of another workaround I'll let you know. When I did the first full install I noted that if /dev/loop2 is in use the wipe and file copy failed. I changed the installer to use a free loop device for the next release.

I really like this puplet. I have used it before but then had some issues with it.
Until now this release is very stable and has most things I need with some easy to install packages.
Of course not everything is perfect, I wasn't able to solve Mplayer not playing in full screen. X11 is the only choice that works, but it is not full screen. Graphics: Integrated S3 UniChrome video chipset on my motherboard.

Truecrypt works fine with above solution in this thread.
Love Concky Desktop Sysmon! With this tool it was very easy to determine what caused the slowness of my PC : emule/wine + truecrypt.

So I installed amule from here
The combination amule + truecrypt is also asking a lot from my CPU (70%), but it is a lot better than emule + wine. UI still feels snappy and it is still pretty comfortable to surf the web.
I also installed the latest Transmission version 1.76 pet instead of 1.75 in this build. Works very good.

How a distro looks is not that important to me, but this looks great
and is still Puppyfast. That is a very nice bonus.

I yet have to install KDE SFS + Kdenlive-0.7.7a.sfs. Kdenlive is a very exiting program. Had some issues with an older version on Ubuntu, so I am looking forward trying this one.

This is a Puppy I am going to recommend to a friend who is not very tech savvy.
Thanks for the hard work tazoc!
