No desktop icons (puppy4.3.1 + ff3.5.5)

#1 Post by stiginge »

I've suddenly lost all of my desktop icons and get two error messages on bootup about an error in /root/Choices/rox-filer/puppypin.
Error in '/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin' file at line 69:
"Missing ',' after icon label"
This may be due to upgrading from a previous version of ROX-Filer. Open the Options window and try changing something and then changing it back (causing the file to be resaved).
Further errors will be ignored.
Also have a second message appearing at same time:
Your old pinboard file has been converted to the new file format.
When i select 'OK' on this message a second message appears:
Error saving pinboard /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: Stale NFS file handle
See attachment for grab of present desktop/pinboard. I'm running firefox 3.5.5 with a number of addons.

Boot puppy with the option pfix=fsck. This will fix the "stale NFS file handle" error, although you might have to do something else to get the pinboard icons back.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Ya puppy pfix=fsck at book seems to have gotten rid of the stale NFS file handle error message.

I managed to restore the background + icons by replacing /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin with /initrd/pup_ro2/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.

I still have a problem in that firefox is not saving configuration changes and does not restore open tabs when system is rebooted.

I deleted the file invalidprefs.js from firefox's profile folder, and after that my ff customisations are saving again.

what I'd like to know is what caused all this hassle on my system? It's like I've been infected by a virus or something (but prob not because linux doesn't get viruses right)? There doesn't seem to me to be any connection between all this upset in my system either...

Any abrupt shutdowns or hard resets?

Depending upon what programs are open and which partitions/devices are mounted, that could do it.

I just had the exact same error message, and my desktop icons were all gone as well as my screensaver. The partition icons were all there still, although they were all layered on top of one another.

I had done a forced shutdown the previous boot because of a hangin flash file, but the time right before I got that error I did a normal shutdown. The only other partition I had mounted was a USB stick.

Is it safe to assume that this is a known bug?

I would be happy to post a log file, if there are any log files that may catalog these type of error events.
