Mplayer and Gxine flash black screens [SOLVED]

#1 Post by bowserevilking »

Right, so I recently switched from a CRT to an LCD monitor(about time! :lol: ) but whenever I fire up mplayer or gxine, the screen flashes black; for a second with mplayer when the new window pops up, but 2-3 seconds in gxine. This is extremely annoying and makes it hard to watch short videos, so any suggestions?

Weird. Does the whole screen flash black?
You might like to try changing the settings of the players to use a different video output.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

I'm not sure how to change those settings. :(
And yes, the whole screen flashes black.

I'm not sure how to change those settings.
Just look for the video settings in the options - you'll have a choice of things like x11, xv, gl, fb... normally I'm recommending people to try xv, to get hardware acceleration, but I'm wondering if you're currently using xv and using x11 would solve your problem.

Okay, so it looks like x11 is the working one, but I'm not sure how to make it use that every time. I have to manually type "mplayer -vo x11 Video" every time, which I am sure will get very annoying. How do I make/edit the config file?
EDIT :I can't find the menu option for doing it in Gxine either.

Sorry, I was kind of assuming you'd use the mplayer gui like most people :oops:
The configuration file for mplayer running from the command line is normally /root/.mplayer/config, and I think you'll want to add this line to the [default] section

Code: Select all

vo=xv
For Gxine you need to change the gui level from beginner to something higher to see the video output setting. Personally I always have it on "master of the known universe" because I can't understand why anyone would want to hide a program's options.

There's... an mplayer gui? I figured most people used the command line! :lol: I guess I don't really need it though.
Thank you for your help disciple. You completely solved my problem. :D
