Lucid Puppy 5.0.1 - 24 May 2010
You're both right!!!Barry usually makes an announcement on his blog whenever the latest Woof is uploaded. That usually happens shortly after the ISO has been uploaded.
You'll then be able to download and set up the Lupu Woof tree on your local machine, which will allow you to build a customised version of Lupu.
Cheers
Tronkel

You're wrong. Files from playdayz's computer (his copy of Woof) don't get magically uploaded to Barry's.
Woof in its current state contains only some generic selection of packages that sits somewhere between 4.3.1 and a basic upup. Things like Quickpet are not included.
It is complicated. Definitely we made quite a few changes to Woof as we worked on Lucid Pup. And if you download Woof now you would not be able to build Lucid Pup. Well, you could build *a* Lucid Pup but not the one that is released. Barry and I are now going to work on reconciling Woof and the Lucid Pup that is released--the ultimate goal is that you *would* be able to download Woof and run it and build *the* Lucid Pup, and then make your own customizations.

The announcement is up on Distrowatch now

Barry is a darn good editor--maybe he will help me with my book
Wow, Scroll down and look at the sizes of the other distros there on Distrowatch. Most are in the gigabytes! I think perhaps we should set a goal of losing 20MB for 5.1. Anyone game?
I hate to rain on the parade but this really strikes me as step down from 4.31 official. At least everything worked (on the computers I have installed it on). The battery monitor is out of its mind. It seems to think that the battery is charging and is at 1%. The package manager has been a bit of a nightmare thus far. I have attempted to install and use programs available in the package managers default repository. None have actually worked and at least one has caused the package manager to lock up.
To be fair I started with a fresh save file each time I encountered a problem to make sure that I had not done something to cause a cascade of events. I did successfully install a web browser with quickpet. I also installed FoxitReader. It works but because the .desktop file is not compatible with puppy's xdg categories there is no menu entry.
All kinds of graphics issues with applications that have scroll bars.
All in all pretty sloppy. Are you sure that this actually the final version and not an early beta?

If you can be more specific with your hardware, error messages, etc in this thread there may be help available for your specific situation. For what it's worth, most peoples experience so far has been quite positive.dawnsboy wrote:I hate to rain on the parade but this really strikes me as step down from 4.31 official. Tahr Pup 6 on desktop, Lucid 3HD on lappie
Why not just move some of the default stuff to Quickpet? Extra calcs, DiDiWiki, PPlog, InkLite, I don't know what else. Obviously Puppy should have needed apps to do things out of the box, why not do a survey post and see what most people are *actually* using Puppy for? Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but the fact that people are using puppy at all pretty much ensures they have an internet connection of some kind to download it in the first place, so why not move some stuff to the cloud? Personally I feel like it would be a plus to be able to get Puppy in a smaller form and just add what you need as you go.playdayz wrote:

And that is good although I can't imagine that they have actually given it a thorough once over.
It should be noted that I am not unhappy with Lucid Puppy. The basic set of apps that have been staples of official Puppy releases seem to work quite well. However as I have pointed out there are some critical issues with the package manager and clearly attention to detail is not what it once was.
For what it is worth the first setup was on my netbook so I decided to install on my desktop. It won't even go there. It can't find my SATA hard drive and drops out of initial ram drive console. Hmm....
Well if this is the direction Puppy is headed in, good luck. I hope that it works out for you.
No, Jack, I didn't remember mostly because I didn't know in the first place.tronkel wrote:Did you remember to update the Ubuntu Lucid package listings from within Puppy Package Manager? This will ensure that necessary dependencies are made available. You even have to do this on a fresh install of real Ubuntu.
I've never done that either on Puppy or Ubuntu. Now I will, thanks! BTW, following your advice worked and Lupu installed ALL of the missing dependencies. Woohoo, Lupu!!!

Hi Warren
Good to see you enjoying Lupu. We may need the international CatDude of mystery to touch up that quickpet icon in the Gimp for you with his 'glassify' script.
Funny, seems like Lupu either works almost perfectly, or just plain doesn't work for some.
Cheers
Mick

Yes. I was looking for that to do a Lucid Puppy logo for the background, too!01micko wrote:Good to see you enjoying Lupu. We may need the international CatDude of mystery to touch up that quickpet icon in the Gimp for you with his 'glassify' script.
Well, the difference for me was in the advice from Jack (Tronkel) that I would have to configure the package manager to update the repository listings so it would find and install all of the dependencies. Knowing that made ALL the difference. Maybe it should be in the opening splash screen in BIG LETTERS or something!01micko wrote:Funny, seems like Lupu either works almost perfectly, or just plain doesn't work for some.

I was unaware of the configure button
I put it here on the wiki
Anything missing?

- hey guys more torrent seeders please
Nothing here?

and where are our xdelta pieces for modem users?
nice release page

The best thing in Lucid Puppy aka Puppy 5 aka Lupu aka Puppy Lucid?
Xinvaders3D - wot no sound - only 20k
- might need some programmer to get sound . . .
We had more testers with Lucid beta
and now we will have loads for 5.1
Also (for example) my included background png is 95k
- disgcraceful - jpg and a bit of compression required
I noticed 20MB aprox was trimmed during the pre release
sequence.
Now that the browser is a choice, which are the biggest programs?
I would like to use kino (nearly there) and VLC
it works in Ubuntu - so is possible . . .
My SFS for Open Office and Xara work
and kompozer makes up for the loss of composer
meaning I can use Firefox.
I started using Firefox with 4.3.1 because
it remembered my last open tabs
and Seamonkey and Firefox and Opera were ALL crashing
because of Adobe Flash - so this feature was needed . . .
Browser choice - hooray
Using java meant I was able to create a video in screentoaster.com
- oh oh - Lucid videos on Youtube please . . .
Our main Lupu developers Larry Short and Mick Amadio
have been a pleasure to work with
(always polite to testy testers like me)
They really worked hard - thanks guys
They have puppitude
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/BowWow
Barrys work on the underlying Woof continues on our base
and I hope Warren, Larry, Mick, Jemimah, Kirk and others
will be able to restrain the irrepressible Ttuuxxx
(be afraid)
who will add a bit of future genius to our new 5.1 and beyond
if his work commitments allow (I think they will - good news there)
If Puppy 5 does not work for you
bug report
It is your operating system
make it work for you
Puppy 5 is not perfect - just adorable
Many may prefer the previous 4.3.1
Not me - I love the new Lucid
Thanks everyone

I First just want to say thanks to everyone who put there time and effort into Lucid Puppy.
Lucid Puppy with full install is running perfect on my old Toshiba Satallite 4090XDVD 400mhz celeron w/192mb ram. Wireless setup with belkin card was easy and even the led lights are now working. I believe this is the best pup yet for this laptop and I have tried 12 over the last two weeks.
Once again thanks guys!

Thanks for all the efforts and sorry me whining but it doesn't say if 5.00 has any bug fixes or changes compared to 4.99playdayz wrote:Puppy Lucid

Lucid Puppy 5.0 is available below.

Thank you all for all the work, creativity, and ideas that you have provided this month. I have noticed during my life that I am happiest when I am learning things, so I have been very happy this month. So happy I could hardly stand it a few times. I hope we can all continue to work together, but at a more relaxed pace for a while.
Lucid Puppy 5.0 would not exist without Woof of course and all the work Barry has done in developing and refining Puppy Linux. Nor would it exist without 01micko and all of the forum members who found the bugs and fixed the bugs. As far as I am concerned this is community edition. Thank you.
My aim is for Lucid Puppy to become a no-brainer to use (ie, no need to read the manual!). Just turn on the PC, and off you go...we're not there yet,... --BKauler
Vision for Lucid Puppy 5.0 -> It will have traditional Puppy screen layout and traditional Puppy apps (updated to latest versions). Things will work as Puppy users expect them to. The big move is to create Puppy on top of the Ubuntu binaries, which raises opportunities for future versions.

If I already have tested 4.99 is 5.00 better at anything? Can I just rename the subdir and menu.lst or do I have to reinstall all the browsers and do the set up again or is it the same iso? What is different?
Don't get me wrong. All power to the devs and thanks for all the efforts all of you have put into this.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

I do. AbiWord. Put a Word Processor Installer in Quickpet, like the present Browser Installer.Extra calcs, DiDiWiki, PPlog, InkLite, I don't know what else.
It's stupid to use inferior software for ideological reasons.
