Opera Great in Lupu

#1 Post by DaveS »

Now I dont know why this should be, but Opera performs brilliantly in Lupu. Font rendering especially is crystal clear, way better than Seamonkey, at least on my system, and start up time is around two seconds from fresh boot (re-mastered).
Adblock and Flash block took a bit of fiddling to get right, but worth it in the end. Brilliant...............

How did you install? Pet? From the Opera site? Which version?
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

Just from the built in browser choices. Version 10.10. Flashblock from Michalis, here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 2daa074056, Adblock using the built in version but with filters installed for the sites I visit. Flashblock has to be configured after installing by telling Opera where to find it, tools>preferences>advanced>content>javascript options, and path it to /root/.opera/userjs/
Opera is very fast on my system, both loading and rendering, and re-mastering (frugal install) makes load times even quicker.

It is very fast and looks great, really surprised me in fact.

The only problem is whenever I use Opera in Puppy, possibly Linux in general, is I tend to encounter instability or memory problems.

Even in Lupu last night while using Opera it caused my whole system to bog down and practically freeze at one point, which is very odd.

Perhaps I'm just very unlucky with Opera or maybe its just one of those things while Lupu is maturing, but in any case I've been using Chromium with no issues which is also very very fast.

I installed it but i'm using fanboy's url list and css sheet (http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/) like i do on my other comp, and it loads a lot faster than seamonkey (mainly because adblock plus slows the shit out of it), and it works well. so far so good :)

I agree on Addblock slowing Seamonkey right down. I always go in and delete the default filters (Easylist), then build my own over time. This is more accurate for what I do, and gives me the speed back. Same with Firefox and Opera.

With regard to memory issues in Opera, I disable the memory and disc caches from the preferences. This slows things down a tiny bit, but seems to prevent overload and also stops the save file from filling up.

Chromium is brilliant, especially for all the add-ons available but it seems to fill up my save file with a huge cache which I never was able to find (to symlink out of save file). Also rendering of fonts was not quite as clear as Opera now is. In time, I hope Chromium gets options to set cache size etc., then it will be hard to beat. Man it is big though....... a ton of code :)

Hi Dave,

Yes I know what you mean about Chromiums usage, I remember even on my Windows machine I noticed it (well, Chrome) using about 700MB on my HDD

Possibly more by now, so that is a concern for Puppy and save files. I guess I will give Opera more of a chance and try tweaking the cache settings etc, it does indeed look very nice and I've heard lots of good things about it.
